The Frankfurt Christmas market was first mentioned in a document at the end of the 14th century, making it the oldest Christmas market in Germany after Bautzen. Over the last hundred years, the magnificently decorated market has also established itself as one of the largest and most beautiful Christmas markets in Germany. The colorful stalls around the Römerberg, the heart of Frankfurt's Christmas market, attract over two million visitors year after year.
Set against the backdrop of the Römer and St. Paul's Church, over 200 festively decorated stalls stretch from Roßmarkt via Zeil, Römerberg and Paulsplatz all the way down to the banks of the River Main. The landmark is the 26-metre-high Christmas tree, which is decorated with around 25,000 lights and 600 bows. This year's tree patron is the Frankfurt Fire Brigade, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary.
In the hut directly under the Christmas tree, guests can not only find comprehensive information about Frankfurt and the Christmas market, but also great Christmas presents for Frankfurt fans. In addition, franked Christmas post can finally be handed in there again to be stamped with the special Deutsche Post postmark.
At the WeihnachtsRoßmarkt the urban skyscraper backdrop is combined with a cozy Christmas atmosphere in a special way: Hot mulled wine from the 16-metre-high pyramid, a ride on the Ferris wheel at the foot of the skyscrapers and, brand new this year, a selfie in the sparkling carriage in front of the Gutenberg monument.
The diverse culinary offerings also include Frankfurt specialties such as Bethmännchen, hot apple wine or Handkäs'-Fondue. There is also an increasing range of vegetarian and vegan dishes, for example at the Pink Christmas Market.
Advent walk through the new Old Town
A slightly different visit to the Christmas market is the Advent walk through the new Old Town. It offers the opportunity to discover the winding alleyways and squares of the new Old Town with a certified tour guide every day at 5 pm. Each participant receives a voucher for a bag of almonds of their choice.
