Highlights and news at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2022

This week it is finally time again: the Frankfurt Book Fair opens your doors. On 19 + 20 October, the fair is open only to trade visitors, the public days invite from Friday to Sunday to discover and experience. Friday and Saturday the book fair is open from 09:00 to 18:30, on Sunday until 17:30. Of course, there are again many familiar highlights, but also quite a few innovations, which we have summarized here for you:

BOOKFEST

A must for all book fans and culture enthusiasts: With over 60 meetings at 20 places in Frankfurt the BOOKFEST of this year waits. Audiobook worlds, crime nights and publishing evenings - the program is as diverse as the authors who present their works here. New this year is the BOOKFEST extra format: at the evening event on October 20 at 8 p.m., Donna Leon will face questions from Shelly Kupferberg.

#BookTok Creation Corner and TikTok Stage at the Agora

On Sunday, 23. October 2022, the social video platform TikTok will host its own stage at the Agora from 10:00-17:00. There, talk sessions, workshops and performances will bring together some of TikTok's popular stars, authors and publishers from the #BookTok community. They will include crime fiction author Arno Strobel as well as TikTokers julesboringlife, flying_bengel, avalino.diversity, charlotteschueler, tabeajoanna and and treesoul. In the #BookTok Creation Corner, you are invited to record your own videos and stream them live from the show to share your impressions with the community.

The Federal Government at the Fair <./strong>

The German government will have its own stand at the Frankfurt Book Fair (Hall 3.1 E 30 and E 31). Employees of the Federal Press Office are looking forward to talking to Book Fair guests. Interactive elements invite you to participate. You can test your knowledge of politics and contemporary history in various quiz rounds. In moderated talk rounds with people from politics and society, current topics such as the "turn of the times" and dealing with disinformation will be discussed.

detektor.fm: Live podcast from the Frankfurt Book Fair

The podcast radio detektor.fm is the official podcast partner of the Frankfurt Book Fair. More than 50 authors will be guests on the studio stage in THE ARTS+ area (Hall 4.0 G 59), including Nora Burgard-Arp, Teresa Bücker, Sebastian Fitzek, Maja Göpel, Jakob Hein, Judith Holofernes, Volker Kutscher, Sheila de Liz, Katja Lewina, Carlo Masala, Luisa Neubauer and Dirk Stermann. detektor.fm will broadcast live from the Frankfurt Book Fair on all days of the fair. Frankfurt Audio: Networking through the Audio Ambassador

Audio books, podcasts, audio software and services: On about 250 square meters, the Frankfurt Audio Area (Hall 3.1) focuses on the spoken word. More than 20 German-speaking exhibitors will present themselves at the joint stand of IG Hörbuch; other international players such as Spotify, Zebralution, Beat Technology, Bookwire, Pozotron, I-Contact, Saga Egmont and Blackstone Publishing will be represented with their own stands or workstations in the area. The three ???, Wladimir Kaminer and Rebecca Gablé will delight audiobook fans with events on the trade fair weekend (October 22-23) in the Frankfurt Studio and the Frankfurt Pavilion, and podcast partner detektor.fm welcomes exciting interview guests on the studio stage (Hall 4.0 G 59) on each day of the fair.

Frankfurt Kids Festival: Program highlights for young book fans

In the focus of the Frankfurt Book Fair 2022: the colorful world of children's and youth media. Old and young fans will be there when Sams creator Paul Maar reads from his new book Das Sams und die große Weihnachtssuche. Or they can let themselves be whisked away into the world of the Woodwalkers by young adult author Katja Brandis. Parents can also take part with their children in the Oetinger treasure hunt right on the exhibition grounds. And the smartphone generation will have the chance to network with the passionate #BookTok community at the TikTok Stage on the Sunday of the fair.

Frankfurt Pavilion: The cultural-political stage of the Frankfurt Book Fair

For two years it has been missing, this fall the striking wooden structure of the architectural firm schneider+schumacher will once again shape the image of the Agora - and not only that.

The Frankfurt Pavilion will take up many current topics and issues in a cultural-political program curated by the Frankfurt Book Fair and its partners, and will help shape the discourse at this year's Book Fair. Events are planned on the defensibility of our democracies, diversity in the media and cultural industries, Russia's war of aggression on Ukraine, the Russian opposition in exile, Afghanistan today, the future of Europe and its literatures, current translation issues, climate and economics, and much more. Sunday at the Frankfurt Pavilion will be devoted to children's and youth media and audiobooks.

Guest of Honor Spain

Under the motto "Creatividad Desbordante - Sparkling Creativity" Spain presents itself as Guest of Honor at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2022. The theme of multilingualism is particularly in focus. The interactive Guest of Honor Pavilion (Forum, Level 1) will provide an impression of Spain's rich and vibrant literary and cultural landscape on two stages and over five days, as well as space for exciting encounters with 200 protagonists from Spain. Among them are Kiko Amat, Elena Medel, Elizabeth Duval, Rosa Montero, Cristina Morales, Sara Mesa and Fernando Aramburu, who will present their books and new publications. By the end of the year, there will be more than 400 books published in the German-speaking market since 2019 on the occasion of the Guest of Honor appearance.

New opening hours for the public | Book sale on the fair weekend

For the first time, private visitors will be able to visit as early as 9.00 o'clock on the Friday of the fair (21 October 2022) to visit the Frankfurt Book Fair. Book sales are also already possible from this time: from Fair Friday to Fair Sunday (October 21-23, 2022), you can purchase books and media from exhibitors at a fixed retail price during your visit.

ARD Stage and Blue Sofa

Proven visitor magnet relocated: This year, the ARD stage is back in the Forum (level 0). Here you can experience bright minds discussing their books and ideas in talks every day. Guests include Elke Heidenreich, Maja Göpel, Judith Holofernes, Richard David Precht, Leïla Slimani, Harald Welzer, Wigald Boning, Amelie Fried, Francis Fulton-Smith, Liao Yiwu and others. The Blue Sofa is back at its location in Hall 3.1. Talks are planned with around 80 authors, including the 2021 Nobel Prize winner for Literature, Abdulrazak Gurnah, Peace Prize winner Serhij Zhadan, Donna Leon, Robert Menasse, Dörte Hansen, Charlotte Link, Andrej Kurkow, Ian Kershaw, David Van Reybrouck, Stefanie Stahl, Vanessa Mai, Melanie Raabe and Takis Würger.

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the weekly Die Zeit and Deutschlandfunk Kultur are also each planning their own stage program. In addition, Neue Zürcher Zeitung and brand eins will also be present in Frankfurt with their own stands. ARTE will devote an afternoon to the project "And now? / Et maintenant?" in the Frankfurt Pavilion. Der Spiegel and Brigitte are involved in the Frankfurt Pavilion's programming with high-profile event formats.
