That Frankfurt is supposed to be located by the sea is by now almost a truism. But now also a fishing village? The thing with the big village? Given? But such a tranquil, picturesque fishing village? It's charming, isn't it? Wonderful fantasies of the balmy Mediterranean and colorful, delicious farmer's markets blossom in my mind's eye.
And that's actually happening in Frankfurt, too. But after the row! Because first, I have to ask: who likes to shop? Because unlike shopping, buying groceries is a chore for me. Routine in the familiar ways. Solid.
However, I had to deviate from the familiar paths for once and ended up in, you guessed it - fishing village. And it came about like this: The other day I was invited to a barbecue at an acquaintance's house. If I think about it, I have grilled like a world champion so far this August. Well, not myself. I had someone grill for me, but I brought other tasty things. I don't know about you guys. But a summer without barbecue is not a summer for me. A breeze, a relaxed mood, goodies on the table... Olives, for example, or mozzarella salad - my tried and tested takeaways at summer parties. I like it simple, but good. And good quality can be bought in Frankfurt at some hidden places, passed on by word of mouth. Or spilled by me here today. Because, what many don't know. Frankfurt offers more than the Kleinmarkthalle in the city center.
Who likes fish will love Venos - the fishing village in Rödelheim. Specialities from all over the Mediterranean and beyond can be found here, as there is an enormous variety of food on a total area of 3,000 square metres. Especially fruits and vegetables from southern countries, more than 400 wines in the vinotheque, spirits, dairy products, fresh - partly live - fish, meat, selected olive oils as well as 100 different pasta variations and sauces from more than 70 countries are part of the regular assortment. Tokyo's fish market may be bigger, but the fat fish and shrimp there are no fresher or shinier. On vacation, I once bagged crabs straight from the cutter to happily pick them myself at home. If you want to feel like you're in an Italian fishing village, you'll get your money's worth at the fresh food vendors.
A visit here is not an everyday trip to the supermarket, but a voyage of discovery. Here I am just as spendy as I am on holiday (*shudder*:-)), although the prices are acceptable. Here I stroll through the Spartan aisles, eyeing this can and eyeing that soda. And what kind of promising white wine is that back there in the box with the straw oozing out of it? After the first purchase I had so much fun, the freshly pickled olives went down so well with the barbecue crowd, that less than two days later my way led me again to the small, hidden "fishing village" in Rödelheim.
