"Mainluststraße" in Frankfurt is a short street. Spanning just two apartment blocks, it leads from the downtown theater directly to the river. It's just a small path that connects urban life with the experience of nature, and yet it sounds so promising. The fact that life in a city with water brings something particularly pleasurable with it must have been suspected, oh, what am I saying, experienced by Frankfurters before us. They certainly wouldn't be surprised by the fact that urban water is one of the biggest draws and a prominent feature of our urban quality of life. Why else would anyone have come up with said street name? Street-name-wise, the city has really let it rip there...;-)
Water has always been a place of longing. Has that changed to this day, I ask you? For me, no. Didn't I just tell you in the last post about the <link https: www.frankfurt-tipp.de insidefrankfurt s shopping was-ist-das-frankfurt-gefuehl.html _blank>Frankfurt-feeling that I would find it hard to imagine living in a city without a river. Might be because I grew up next to a little stream. There's just always something to experience, enjoy and sit back by the water.
Lust for the Main
What's Frankfurt's most visited stretch of the Main? Naturally, most think from the Ostend to Nice at most. Then that's it. Not everyone knows the Licht- und Luftbad in Niederrad (LiLu), knows that a city with a river also needs a proper water and shipping office, and at the Lilu is a branch of the office called "Frankfurt". In the intermediate arm, at the transition to the Lilu lies the romantic and beautifully overgrown boat, the "MS Heimliche Liebe".
When I wanted to become native in Frankfurt, my first bicycle tours to discover the city led me along the Main. Beyond the Ostend to the dreamy <link https: www.frankfurt-tipp.de insidefrankfurt s shopping rund-um-frankfurt-mit-fahrrad-und-faehre-die-ultimative-radtour-ueber-den-main.html _blank>Rumpenheim and in the west to the quaint ferry to Höchst, which ferries cyclists and pedestrians across the Main. More adventurous is the river crossing in the east, because cars can also get on the ferry there, which is wonderful fun and hardly costs anything.
Why is it so beautiful on the river?
Is there anything better for the city stress than the peace that the flowing water induces by its equanimous passing? Even on the Main, a tour on the<link https: www.frankfurt-tipp.de insidefrankfurt s shopping frankfurt-bei-jedem-wetter-7-ideen-fuer-sonne-und-regen.html _blank> excursion boat up to the respective locks is like a little vacation from everyday life. The skyline can be marvelled at, I can wave to the people on the banks and feel like I'm on a giant steamer setting off on a great voyage. Can say because I've already tried it out with girlfriends for after-work :-)
Turn off, stroll, adventure
At the river I can turn off, adventure, stroll or retreat and relax. Each one as he or she likes. And so not only the yacht club with new operator finally anchors again on the Main or the above-mentioned nature ship, but also houseboats hide here and there. At the height of the Gerbermühle, in the Ruderdorf you can dine deliciously and very resourceful go to one of the most hidden Strandcafés on the river. Can you guess which one I mean? Resolution will be in my post next week on "Really well hidden Cafés and pubs".
What is your favorite thing to do on Main and which section is your favorite?
