Two meaningful and wonderful weeks - Frankfurt reads again

In a city like Frankfurt there is always something going on, there is always something to discover. But then there are these small, subtle, very special events that make life here so worth living. What is it for you? For me, "<link https: www.frankfurt-tipp.de ffm-aktuell s ugc frankfurt-liest-ein-buch-2017-das-programm-wurde-vorgestellt.html _blank>Frankfurt reads a book" is definitely one of them. Maybe some of you are rolling your eyes now; but wait. It's not what you think! But completely different.

What is there to the story? I already described how the principle of reading works, who started the event, last year. (Link) This year, the focus is on the book of a well-known Frankfurter, Herbert Heckmann. Among other things, he was a former co-editor of the Neue Rundschau and wrote "Benjamin and His Fathers" in 1962.

What's fascinating about the story? Its main setting on Berger Strasse in Bornheim! The author got to know the street, so beloved by many Frankfurt residents, from the Nordend to Bornheim at first hand when he visited his grandparents back then. In the book, he lets his main character Benjamin go on a search for his father and identity against the backdrop of the tottering Weimar Republic. Mayor Peter Feldmann spoke in this context of "touching images from our old Frankfurt".

In today's Frankfurt, many children and young people also grow up. Currently, they make up sixteen percent of the total population. That's about the size of a delicious slice of cake I load onto my plate on Sundays. Quite a few of these children grow up without a father. (Often enough, sadly, without a mother.) As part of the reading event, which runs from April 24 to May 7, Theater Grüne Soße, for example, asks what it's like to grow up without a father in a space/sound installation called "Losing Fathers."

Of course, the popular Bornheim neighborhood to the east doesn't miss out during this event season. Who would be better suited for a historical tour through the former "funny village" than the city historian Bernhard E. Ochs?

In the Bollinger bookstore, the improvisation theater "Für Garderobe keine Haftung" helps Benjamin in his search for his father. The event was already a big success in 2016. Now they are at it again.

And what could be more obvious than letting children themselves think about the topic? Students from grades 7 to 10 present their ideas about the book and wondered what music Benjamin might have heard. Of course, there are pieces of music from that time! The Lord Mayor will also read passages from the book.
