Latex, whips, bosom bars, the <link http: frankfurt-bahnhofsviertel.de _blank>Frankfurt's Bahnhofsviertel is preceded in the Republic by its wicked reputation. There are no visitors from outside who don't ask for a guided tour with a mixture of disgust and curiosity for a bit of wickedness. Rarely have we let ourselves be asked. Of course, not without putting on an aura of metropolitan attitude, proudly aware of navigating casually and carefree between junkies and petty criminals. A little East Village and New York from the 70s never hurt anyone and a little show for the visitors is allowed. But lately, apparently, it's all over with the showing off for us.
Gentrification has finally taken hold of the city's dirty pride and joy. More restaurants, fancy bars and street parties instead of hookers and nudists. I remember the latex shop and patent leather platform boots about five years ago. Gone. Which doesn't really surprise me; today patent leather and corsets with dominatrix appeal have conquered the mainstream of fashion as was just seen on the catwalks. Only next to the public library in the Töngesgasse the shop "Sündige Mode" still holds its ground. The Bahnhofsviertel captivates with its international character, "the flair of a modern metropolis mixed with old-fashioned narrowness," as Max Beckmann once enthused. Here he could keep his distance and at the same time find closeness when he wanted to. He painted not only the synagogue in the Westend, but also the main train station. If you look closely, you can see the façade of one of the upper-middle-class buildings from the Empire on the left of the picture, which make up the architectural charm of the quarter. But in the meantime, Münchner Strasse has been conquered by eateries that are hip among those who want to be considered hip. Taunusstraße does not invite you to linger, nor do other cross streets to Kaiserstraße, which still forms the boulevard. But the internationality leaves its mark even more than before: a huge Asian supermarket can be found diagonally opposite the Persian food market full of Iranians and Afghans. But otherwise? Where did the latex go? What do you think, where did it stay and what do you think about the change in the Bahnhofsviertel? Hop or Top?
