Secret Service Agent Mike Banning (Gerard Butler) gives everything in his job. When it comes to protecting the life of the President of the United States (Morgan Freeman), Banning is unstoppable. His body has taken a beating in the process, and it's slowly becoming time for the agent to think about taking on a much less dangerous desk job. But he doesn't get to make a decision because an assassination attempt on the President kills the entire Secret Service team - all except Mike. All signs point to him being behind the hit. As the President fights for his life, Mike must find out who is really behind the attack while on the run from his colleagues and from the FBI. But time is running out for him.
Angel has fallen is the third action thriller about Secret Service agent Mike Banning, portrayed by Gerard Butler, following Olympus has fallen and London has fallen. Let's be honest: The first two parts were not really good movies - but really good entertainment. Especially in the second part the logic was almost completely gone. But the whole thing was entertaining. If you were already bothered by logic holes, clichés and a certain predictability in these movies, you should immediately drop the plan to watch this third part. But those who would call themselves fans will definitely get their money's worth here.
However, a small caveat applies here as well. For like Mike Banning's body, the film series shows slight signs of fatigue. There are some overly plodding dialogue sequences, which suffer mostly from the fact that the script just isn't written very well. The best example of this, for instance, is the fact that even as an untrained viewer, you know who the film's villain is after just three seconds. When he then drops his mask, the audience is left without any kind of surprise effect. Here, too, it would have been better if actors had been chosen for two key roles that you wouldn't expect to be truly evil.
When action does come, at least director Ric Roman Waugh delivers convincingly. Again, not quite as cracking as its predecessors, but still entertaining. Gerard Butler does his thing as an action hero drawn by his work really well. Angel has fallen may be the weakest part of the series so far, where the weaknesses can no longer hide quite so well behind the furious action. But if you're just looking for solid entertainment with a decent punch factor and don't want to be challenged too much intellectually, this is the movie for you. And that's why there's a solid: worth seeing!
