In the marriage of Anna (Birgit Minichmayr) and Nick (Philipp Hochmair) there is a huge crisis. A six-month sabbatical in the Swiss mountains is supposed to breathe new life into their relationship. At the same time, Nick wants to use the time to write a cookbook about forgotten Swiss dishes, while children's author Anna wants to finally write her first book for adults. On the way to their cabin, the two have an accident with a sheep, which fortunately only the animal does not survive. But after the collision, nothing is the same anymore. In the hut, strange events multiply, which make Anna doubt her sanity more and more. Similarly, Mischa (Mona Petri), who looks after the apartment of the couple and is also confronted with disturbing events after a head injury.

Animals - Stadt Land Tier is a . yes, what is the film actually? A mystery drama? A psychological romance? A comedy full of absurdist shallowness? Or somehow all of them together? Greg Zglinski's film can't really be pigeonholed like that. And the worst thing you can do as a viewer is try to understand what the Polish filmmaker has brought to the screen. His play with reality(s) and with linearity is bizarre, absurd, funny, disturbing and highly fascinating. But it also demands a lot from the viewer. Because getting involved in such a crazy trip is definitely not everyone's cup of tea.

That comparisons with masters of the surreal such as David Lynch are not omitted is definitely to be taken as a compliment. But it is also to be understood a little bit as a warning for such viewers, who don't want to get everything served on a silver platter, but still want to be offered something like a logical or comprehensible resolution. If you don't necessarily need that, you'll be rewarded with a movie that has a really fascinating atmosphere and a good ensemble of actors. Birgit Minichmayr in particular is really good as the children's author on the brink of insanity.

Animals - Stadt Land Tier is a feast for all lovers of inappropriate program cinema fare that, while obviously bowing to other filmmakers and their works, nevertheless defies any form of explicitness. A truly insane mystery that, despite a certain unwieldiness, absolutely deserves a viewing score
