It was a big gamble to film the historical drama "Poldark" again, after the first adaptation of Winston Graham's novels in the 1970s was one of the most successful BBC productions of all time. Another film adaptation would have to measure up to that first. But even the lavish remake turned out to be a real ratings hit in the UK from 2015 onwards. In times when significantly more linear channels, but also additional streaming offerings, are literally flooding the market with series, "Poldark" was able to lure an average of 8 million fans in front of the screens. 5 seasons were staged, with the final episodes no longer based on a novel by Graham, but set by screenwriter Debbie Horsfield in the eleven-year time gap between volumes 7 and 8.
However, the success of the series, which ended this year, did not come by accident: a compelling ensemble led by lady-love Aidan Turner ("The Hobbit"), plus stunning locations, superb set design and, above all, stirringly written scripts full of adventure, romance and drama make this series a real treat.
