Content: In an age when streaming services and cable channels are churning out quality TV fare like Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Luther and House of Cards, one is almost tempted to think they're in seventh television heaven. But appearances are deceptive. Because in the shallows of both public and private broadcasters, TV viewers also get to see C-list celebrities in the Big Brother house, porn stars urinating in Bembel or unspeakable life advice on AstroTV. There one would not like to believe at all, which one gets put there sometimes before. But fortunately there is a loud, very clear voice of reason: Oliver Kalkofe. He has been using his satirical format Kalkofes Mattscheibe for well over a decade now to draw attention to the ills of German television in an entertaining, biting and merciless way.
In view of the high entertainment value of the show, one would almost like to be grateful to the makers of the parodied and commented formats that they deliver such horror. But if you consider exactly what financial resources and sometimes also technical talent is burned here, just to make quota or to rip off viewers, then it is actually no longer funny, but just sad. But when Oliver Kalkofe and his team devote themselves to the various trash formats - and in this season for the first time also various YouTube clips - then nevertheless no eye remains dry.
No matter whether it's about long-running commercials, talk shows, election commercials, docu-soaps, reality formats like Germany's Next Topmodel and Promi Big Brother (although the very term "celebrity" has something satirical about it), astro-shows or, in general, personalities who are always pushing themselves into the media spotlight - no one is safe from Kalkofe's sharp tongue. That his comments themselves often aim below the belt and are not always politically correct may not please some fine minds, but speaks to all clear-thinking TV junkies absolutely from the soul.
A particular highlight of the season is undoubtedly the Too Hot for Prime Time episode, which really penetrates the depths of the lowbrow nature of television. But the other 21 episodes also bring unbelievable things to light, which makes it all too understandable why more and more viewers are saying goodbye to linear TV and preferring to turn to streaming services, pay TV and DVD/Blu-rays. And since there is also Kalkofes Mattscheibe REKALKED in this format, applies to the DVD box of the third season a very clear: Absolutely worth seeing!
Picture + Sound: The image and sound quality is on a good level for a TV comedy show. The picture is clean, sharpness is decent and colors are powerfully mixed. The sound, which is in Dolby Stereo, conveys Kalkofe's biting comments clearly and powerfully on the speakers, although it's not a bad thing that the whole thing is mainly very central and has little in the way of dynamics to offer. Good!
Extras: Again, this DVD box set has plenty of extra material to offer. For all episodes there are amusing as well as insightful commentaries by Oliver Kalkofe, the directors Lasse Nolte and Daniel Krauss, post producer Jens Menzel and chief judge Oliver Mohme. Every commentary here is absolutely worth listening to! In addition to the commentaries, there is an extensive making of the season (approx. 55 min.), a short making of the Eisgurken Challenge (approx. 5 min.), as well as an extended version of the Grundsoliden Makler and an uncut version of Orina's telephone window. In addition, there is a greeting and interactive menus, five unreleased clips and an excerpt of Oliver Kalkofes appearance in Der goldene Nazivampir von Absam 2. But that's not all: The box also has all the episodes of Kalkofes camp report on the jungle camp (audio only), as well as his really good comments on hate and stupidity, and the attack in Paris. All in all, fans get over 150 minutes of bonus material here in addition to 500 minutes of matte disc. Very good!
Conclusion: Kalkofes Mattscheibe REKALKED is again in the third season biting TV satire at its best. When Oliver Kalkofe strikes out against trash TV, it's nasty, not always politically correct and sometimes even crude - but it always hits the nail on the head. And that's why this satirical show is still very popular after all these years. The DVD box set of the third REKALKED season presents all 22 episodes as well as the big review of the year 2014 and lots of extras. As a Mattscheibe fan, you simply can not get past this box. Absolutely recommended!
