Movie: Already on his everyday way to work in his Kreuzberg record store, Götz (Florian David Fitz) is confronted with the not always problem-free clash of cultures; after all, the neighboring stores are all firmly in Turkish hands. But even though his employee Horst (delicious: Charly Hübner) constantly throws around prejudices and conspiracy theories, the multi-culti neighborhood actually works quite well. Until Götz falls in love with the Turkish girl Aylin (Mandala Tayde). Her family, especially her father Süleyman (Hilmi Sözer), does not take kindly to this. But since Götz has found his dream girl in Aylin, he does everything in his power to earn her family's respect and approval. But this is harder than expected - especially when his mother (Katrin Saß) interferes in the already complicated relationship.
After its first broadcast, Meine verrückte türkische Hochzeit was able to convince not only critics but also the audience and was rewarded with several awards and nominations. After his series success Doctor`s Diary and cinema hits such as Männerherzen and of course vincent will meer, leading actor Florian David Fitz is currently very popular, so of course a remake of the TV film had to be made. And those who have not yet had the opportunity to watch this romantic comedy should definitely do so now. Because even if My Crazy Turkish Wedding has borrowed its ideas sometimes a bit brazenly from films like My Big Fat Greek Wedding, which is at least openly admitted in the audio commentary, the whole thing has enough wit and charm to please lovers of German comedies.
Sure, the script is not exactly sparing with clichés. But there are always moments that show that the makers are well aware of the underlying issues of the story and take the whole thing quite seriously. Sure, in the end the whole thing is a light comedy with an obligatory happy ending. Of course, in some moments, reality would perhaps look a little different. But alone a heated discussion that Götz has with Aylin's family in the last third, in which it becomes clear that racism and prejudice do not only come from one direction, proves that the authors have understood an important point of the whole integration discussion that is currently so heated. That in the end the message is that we can all live together peacefully if ALL are open-minded and willing to approach each other is actually a very nice thing.
My Crazy Turkish Wedding may seem a bit naive here and there and some of the dialogue seems very cliché, but the bottom line is that the film has its heart in the right place and the charming actors ensure that the multicultural romantic comedy knows how to entertain despite minor weaknesses in the end. Recommendable!
Picture + Sound: The DVD presents the film in the neat 5.1 Dolby Digital sound, which only slightly enhances the rather decent tonal events. Overall, the picture and sound are neatly implemented and is on a pleasantly high level for a TV production. Good!
Extras: The DVD has a few nice extras to offer. It starts off with an audio commentary by lead actor Florian David Fitz, director Stefan Holtz, cinematographer Bernhard Jasper and producer Christian Becker. The commentary is not only worth listening to because of the good-humored participants, but primarily because it offers many very interesting details about the shooting. Here the viewer also learns that the first cut of the film was almost two hours long, but had to be shortened by over twenty minutes to fit into ProSieben's broadcasting scheme. These twenty minutes are now also included in the bonus material on the DVD and offer also some quite worth seeing moments.
Finally there are short scenes from the casting, a team film with more or less amusing outtakes, as well as a photo gallery, which shows Hilmi Sözer's transformation into Süleyman. Overall, for a TV production more than satisfactory extras.
Conclusion: My crazy Turkish wedding could after the TV broadcast not only good ratings, but also many prizes, including the Grimme Award and the 3Sat audience award. Not least due to the success of lead actor Florian David Fitz in Doctor`s Diary and vincent will meer, the award-winning TV production has now made it to a nice remake. The technical presentation is on a good level and also the bonus material pleases
