Over four seasons, the Swedish-Danish crime series The Bridge - Transit to Death (original title: Danish Broen, Swedish Bron) was a huge success worldwide, acclaimed by critics and audiences alike. Scandinavian crime and thriller series have enjoyed enormous popularity for many years, often due to the exciting scripts, compelling actors and top-notch quality of the film and TV productions. So why has The Bridge in particular taken viewers by storm, and what is the extraordinary fascination of this series? First of all, it is the ingenious basic idea of setting the investigations in the complete series on the border of two countries, which leads to a cooperation of the respective police units in charge - with all their communication difficulties, the different ways of working and the resulting problems.
In the successful mixture of crime thriller, political thriller and social drama are always current, socially relevant topics such as climate catastrophe, environmental destruction, domestic violence, xenophobia, homophobia or hate speech on the net. The challenging and twisty scripts have been perfectly and tremendously grippingly directed, offering sustained suspense from the first minute to the last. The highlight, however, may be the brilliantly acted cast, led by Swedish actress Sofia Helin, who obviously embodies the role of a lifetime in Saga Norén, a policewoman with psycho-social difficulties. Her Danish colleagues Kim Bodnia and Thure Lindhardt, as investigators Martin Rohde and Henrik Sabroe, provide emotive counterpoints to Saga's gruff manner and apparent lack of emotion. The initial mutual incomprehension and later growing together of Saga and her partners make up the inimitable charm of these constellations and form a new and special variant of the classic investigator duos.
Although The Bridge constantly demands the highest attention from the viewer and you often have to leave your comfort zone due to the sometimes drastic depictions and uneasy mood, the series creates a tremendous suction force and thus remains in the memory for a long time.
The bridge has not invented the genre "Nordic Noir", but it has perfected it!
