Film: Anyone who grew up in the 70s and 80s simply couldn't get past the Yps magazine. After funny and exciting comics and interesting articles, the gimmicks always made the magazine a real experience for the young fans. Thanks to Yps, you could breed prehistoric crabs, become a secret agent, make rockets take off, fabricate square eggs or scare the annoying sisters with rubber spiders. No question about it - Yps was cult. But in 2000, after 25 years, it was over. There were several attempts to revive the cult, but they failed miserably. It wasn't until 2012 that it made a comeback with a new direction. By targeting adult men between 35 and 40, who once grew up with the comic magazine, the new Yps was able to pick up where it left off. The test edition was then also sold out within a very short time.

In December 2013, Yps - Die Sendung went on air for the first time. The amusing knowledge magazine with Jan Köppen was not only well received by RTL Nitro viewers, the pilot episode was also nominated for the Grimme Award. So it was no surprise that a first season was quickly commissioned, whose ten episodes have now been released on DVD, divided into Science Edition and Lifestyle Edition.

The Science Edition contains a total of six episodes. In addition to the pilot episode Yps in secret mission, viewers can still leaf through the file Yps, hire detective Yps, visit the hunters of lost treasures, go on a hunt for aliens or investigate the question of whether robots are friend or foe. In a not always entirely serious manner, it balances somewhere between science and weirdness, between facts and conspiracy theories. It's about how you can disappear without a trace in times of the internet and total surveillance, what advances there are in robotics, what the work of real ghost hunters looks like or how extraterrestrial life is being researched.

What makes the magazine so successful is the charming and relaxed way in which the topics are treated here. In doing so, the makers have succeeded well in capturing the flair of the cult magazine and reminding adult viewers what it was like to wish to be a detective, secret agent or explorer as a child. A knowledge magazine for the young and young at heart that is well worth watching several times. And that's why there is also a clear: recommendable for this DVD!

Picture + Sound: The picture and sound quality of the DVD is on a good TV level. The picture is clean and free of visible glitches. Image sharpness is at a good level, revealing a few weaknesses only in darker scenes. Colouring looks very pleasing and contrasts are neatly mixed. The audio, which is in stereo, is largely unspectacular but presents dialogue, voice-over commentary and music quite powerfully from the speakers. Good!

Extras: As an extra, there is quite in the tradition of the Yps magazines a small gimmick. However, it is not about primeval crabs, agent passes or solar blimps, but a small Yps poster.

Conclusion: Yps is cult! The magazine's successful revival has confirmed that once again. The accompanying TV magazine is entertainingly made and explores interesting topics in an amusing as well as charming way. The Science Edition is about aliens, agents, robots or ghosts - all in classic Yps style! The individual episodes of the knowledge magazine are technically well done and as a little gimmick there is also a Yps poster. For all kids of the 80s, who used to dream of becoming ghost hunters or secret agents, definitely recommendable!
