The opening concert of the 50th German Jazz Festival Frankfurt congratulates the Munich-based record label ECM on its 50th birthday. Managed to this day by Manfred Eicher, the still independent label has arguably moved more than all the majors: it has set new aesthetic standards, established European jazz worldwide and launched the careers of many of jazz's pillar saints at the crucial moment.
In his tireless search "for a truth of expression", Manfred Eicher repeatedly lands with musicians* who listen inward before they speak out. Jakob Bro is one of them. The Dane, who became known as a sideman of Tomasz Stanko and Paul Motian, joins the long list of impressive guitarists associated with the name ECM. In the second part of the concert, Michael Formanek brings his vision of large-scale orchestral jazz in the 21st century to the stage, together with the hr-Bigband conducted by Jim McNeely and illustrious guests. A solo recital by Swiss-Albanian singer Elina Duni will bring the evening to a close in the Albert Mangelsdorff Foyer.
