19:15: Concert introduction with Christian Kabitz in the Mozart Hall

"You don't know the St. John Passion?", Sir Simon Rattle was once asked, stunned, by a musician - by which time the conductor was already 30 years old. The musician then immediately transferred a cassette to him, providing a key musical experience for the conductor. "That's really Bach! It sounded to me like Stravinsky or something else 200 years after Bach. . This surging sea of sound, these dissonances, and the woodwinds sending out their calls like someone was drowning in this sea. From then on, I was completely enthralled with the piece." By now, of course, the Briton has long known the St. John Passion inside and out. One of the most recent results of this ongoing engagement with the work is the semi-staged version he realized together with star director Peter Sellars, with which the two caused a sensation in Berlin in 2014. What made this "ritualisation" (Sellars' deliberate choice of words) so successful in Berlin, and what will undoubtedly delight audiences in Frankfurt, is its urgency, its exploration of the spiritual side of the work as well as its dramatic one. And last but not least, a star cast that is second to none. Mark Padmore - "the" evangelist of all -, Magdalena Kožená, Christian Gerhaher and other outstanding vocal soloists make this production an event.
