At the end of August and beginning of September, the city park once again becomes the top address for wine lovers. Then the spacious green area with rose garden forms the romantic backdrop for Mainz's largest wine festival.
You can taste wines from Mainz and Rheinhessen in particular, but also from the Rheingau and Nahe regions at the wine market. Every year, a different international wine capital presents itself in the wine village of the Great Wine Capitals. At the sparkling wine festival in the rose garden, at the long seating areas throughout the grounds or sitting on the large meadows, you can taste, chat and celebrate extensively.
Locals and guests quickly strike up a conversation. Perhaps about the typical Rhine-Hessian wine vocabulary? Tip: If you only want to enjoy a small sip after your "Spundekäs", it's best to order a "Piffche". After all, it takes no longer than a whistle to finish the 0.1-liter glass.
If you're in the mood for arts and crafts, the artists' market in the rose garden is the place to be. The festival's younger guests can run around to their heart's content on the children's meadow by the flamingo pond on both weekends. Whether it's bouncing on the bouncy castle, face painting or listening and browsing through the book boxes in the reading tent at the cathedral library, there is something for every temperament.
