Gleaming and sticky, the "black gold" opened a new age of humanity. That oil can make the dream of wealth and power a reality is illustrated by the story of wily oil tycoon J. Arnold Ross in Upton Sinclair's 1926 novel "Oil!" Ross's empire already has an heir: his son Bunny. But Bunny is different from his father. The older he gets, the more exploitation and bribery disgust him. While Ross is on his way to make Hollywood another building block of his success, Bunny and his idealism get caught between the fronts of glamour and politics, faith and capital, his own privileges and his sympathies towards the working class. Jan-Christoph Gockel adapts Sinclair's epic, which was made into a film under the title "There Will Be Blood." "Oil!" memorably connects the dirty business surrounding raw materials, the exploitation of nature and the excesses of megalomaniacal capitalism.
