After the residents of Opernplatz had to put up with noise and construction fences in front of their stores during the years-long reconstruction of the Alte Oper, the then Lord Mayor Dr. Walter Wallmann had the first Opernplatzfest, which was then called the Lucae Fountain Festival, held in 1978 as a gesture of thanks. Since then, the Opernplatzfest has been one of the most beautiful, traditional and popular of Frankfurt's "new" city festivals. An average of 300,000 visitors come here every year to enjoy international specialties and live music.
The Opernplatzfest once again offers a wide variety of culinary and musical delights.
