Closing your eyes and dreaming of distant worlds: Especially in winter this is really good. And now imagine that you can not only see the distant world before your inner eyes, but also smell and taste it. Today we take you to the Bombay Palace Restaurant in Sachsenhausen. No other Indian restaurant has been in Frankfurt for such a long time.

As soon as you open the doors into the dining room for 100 people, you notice the very typical Bombay Palace: spices. But not just any spices, but specially planted, harvested and self-mixed spices. Owner Aswani Kumar Ahluwalia is particularly proud of this. After all, in Indian cuisine, spices are responsible for the distinctiveness of classic dishes. We follow the chef's recommendation and try a dish from the tandoor, Chicken Bombay, the house specialty. With this dish, Mr. Kumar Ahluwalia - affectionately called Nicky by regulars - won an award as the best Indian restaurant in Frankfurt in the TV show "Mein Lokal, Dein Lokal" in 2016. He scored 28 out of a possible 30 points, well ahead of the runner-up, who scored 22 points from the judges. Nicky took over the restaurant more than 16 years ago. He takes a sporting view of the fact that there are now so many Indian restaurants in Frankfurt: "After all, competition stimulates business and that's fun! The sauce of the Chicken Bombay dish is particularly creamy and convinces with the intensity and balance of the flavours. Oh yes, the spices really make a difference!

As we all know, the eye eats with you. That's why the interior design also follows a coherent concept. All the furniture is imported directly from India. Filigree wood carvings and massive, heavy gold statues of the gods Ganesha, Krishna and others adorn the windows to the outside and transform the interior into a cosy palace. To make the break from everyday life perfect, the service is cordial but not intrusive. At all times, we feel well taken care of. The personal connection to the guests is important to Chef Nicky. Many guests have been loyal to Bombay Palace for more than ten years, we learn. By the way, the kitchen at Bombay Palace is careful with the spiciness - in addition to "European spicy", hardcore diners can also order "Indian spicy". We didn't dare to do that. In any case, the home-baked bread is indispensable with all dishes. It's fluffy, soft and aromatic. Vegetarians can also look forward to a large selection of Indian specialties.

By the way: since recently you can also get an appetite for Bombay Palace in Frankfurt's Kleinmarkthalle. There is now an offshoot with small Indian delicacies like samosas and pakoras. Our tip: Happy Hour is on Thursdays from 12 to 3 pm. If you order three dishes, you only have to pay for two during this period.
