As the Frankfurt Beer Riots of April 21, 1873, the most momentous social unrest between the revolutions of 1848 and 1918 in Frankfurt am Main have gone down in city history. The riots were triggered by an increase in the price of beer by the local breweries. Beginning in the afternoon, a procession of about 100 people formed from the mass of spring fair-goers, quickly joined by others. A red curtain was used to make a banner, behind which the crowd moved downtown with the battle cry "Mir wolle Batzebier". In the hours that followed, numerous brewery pubs were destroyed. Furniture and windows were smashed, beer was dumped on the street. Frankfurt breweries announced a rollback of price increases after the beer riot.
