Enjoyment is something really nice. Especially when you can share it. Discovering new locations, trying exciting dishes and sharing completely new taste experiences with nice people - that's what makes enjoyment really fun! So why not use that as the basis for a special kind of city tour? Frankfurt student Kathey Tran came up with this idea during a semester abroad in Melbourne, Australia. There were so many exciting and innovative food concepts here that it was almost impossible to try your way through this rich offer. So why not order just one or two dishes for several people everywhere, and experience more flavour explosions that way?
Through the experience resulting from this idea, Kathey was inspired to transfer the concept of a tasting tour through different gastronomic establishments from Melbourne to Frankfurt. Interested partners were quickly found and SHARING PLATE was born. Since November, groups of 4 to 10 people have been meeting to discover new culinary highlights in the Main metropolis and to get to know nice people in the process. Of course, a nice idea is not enough to make such a concept work. That's why we wanted to see SHARING PLATE for ourselves - only to discover very quickly how well thought-out, charming and professionally this culinary experience has been implemented.
The tour SHARING PLATE invited us on begins in Heilgkreuzgasse near Konstablerwache. At the Baltique Deli we are warmly welcomed by Kathey and introduced to the other participants. Right at the beginning it becomes clear what makes this tour so special. On the one hand, you get to know new locations even as a true Frankfurter. On the other hand, especially in this day and age, it's simply nice to meet new people and possibly even make friends by eating together. As different as the participants of our tour may have been at first glance, we quickly discovered a lot of similarities in conversation. Another point that makes the implementation so successful is that Kathey not only presents the culinary offerings of the locations visited, but also the movers and shakers behind the scenes, which you as a guest often do not get to see otherwise. Simply beautiful!
Back to our tour. At Baltique Deli, a Latvian restaurant specializing in modern creative cuisine, we get to try a risotto with sun-dried tomatoes, fresh onions, and aroma of white truffles & sea bass fillet & orange sauce, as well as the house specialty. These are pank?kas, Latvian pancakes baked from wheat or buckwheat, which Baltique Deli offers with savoury, sweet or fruity fillings. We try the version with Rügen soft cheese, fresh herbs and cranberries and enjoy the little taste explosion, when it is already time to say goodbye to the nice team of this restaurant.
Kathey shortens the way to the second location for the tour participants with a little Frankfurt quiz. This also has the effect that the people, who were mostly strangers to each other until a few minutes ago, become closer. Only directly in front of SHARING PLATE partner number 2 is revealed what now awaits us: At Tellys TST we are allowed to try very special pasta (beetroot rigatoni with porcini cream sauce and chicken strips), which can convince with a pleasant spiciness and surprising flavour combinations. We quickly realize: we will definitely try one of the exquisite premium pasta to-go variations here again soon. Before we say goodbye, there is a sweet surprise: sweet gnocchi with nougat filling. If you like sweet things, you will love this dessert!
The third stop on the tour is also only a few meters away from the Zeil and yet a real new discovery: the Korean restaurant Gangnam convinces with bibimbap, a popular dish that we were allowed to try with either beef or cheese. Also on the table here were kimchi and zucchini pancakes. The taste of these dishes, the warm service and the info that they also serve Korean BBQ lead to the decision to come back here soon for a full meal as well. But what was really surprising was what was offered to drink at Gangnam: There was fresh strawberry or mango juice mixed with homemade cream cheese to drink. Sounds like a daring combination, but it tastes extremely refreshing and really good.
Time for an interim conclusion: The first three locations really surprised us and the atmosphere within the group is getting better and better. You feel like among friends by now. And you don't notice how fast time flies. But luckily the tour is not over yet. The way to the next location is a bit longer. Therefore, there is first a small power boost at the Cfruitbar in MyZeil. To our shame, we have to confess that we pass by here almost every day, but have never stopped at the Fruitbar. That will certainly change, because the small taste of the fruit juice mix of orange juice, pineapple, melon, mango, coconut, mint with guarana (a healthy alternative to caffeine) and lemongrass makes the taste buds rejoice and gives new strength for the next stops.
The common walk to the next SHARING PLATE partner is then shortened by the second part of the Frankfurt quiz. The question is of course not revealed here, but also we could learn here a detail about our city, which we would have estimated quite differently. After a few more minutes we are standing in front of the burger restaurant What`s Beef. The special thing here is not only the interior, which really makes you feel like you have been teleported to New York without further ado. The burger we are allowed to share here is called Selim`s ABC. The burger with avocado, bacon and cheddar convinces taste-wise, but is not the real highlight of our visit here. The side dish, crispy yucca fries made from cassava root, are a surprising alternative to regular fries or the currently so popular sweet potato fries. Especially with the aioli dip, this exotic variation can convince. But the real eye-catcher was the dessert: a Choc Schock Shake. Simply awesome! The shakes at What`s Beef are generally not only a sweet sin to indulge in. They are also extremely popular photo motifs. Why? You should definitely take a picture of that for yourself.
It's dusk outside by now and we head for the last stop: The charming Café Roseli. Although our stomachs are well filled by now, we simply cannot resist the temptations offered to us here. Besides the Roseli tabouleh salad, the vegan Apple Crumble with cinnamon scores particularly well. In addition, the charming atmosphere of the Cafés, so that we are also more than satisfied at the end of our tour. Full and in an extremely good mood.
You see, the impression we got from the tour and the SHARING PLATE team was positive all around. We were not only convinced by the culinary offer of the partners, but also by the charming, yet really well thought-out implementation of the concept. By the way, this also includes a goodie bag that each participant receives as a gift. Among other things, it contains an additional incentive to visit the individual locations of the tour again on your own: The Sharing Plate Club Card, which has a few blank spaces on the back. For these you get a puzzle piece when you order at least one main course from the respective partner. If the picture is complete, there is a 10 <x>ampersand</x>euro; discount on the next SHARING PLATE tour.
By the way, you have the choice between the SHARING DOWNTOWN TOUR, the SHARING BAHNHOFSVIERTEL TOUR, and the SHARING BERGERSTREET TOUR, which we attended. No question for us that we will also try one of the other two tours as soon as possible.
By the way, SHARING PLATE founder Kathey has really taken the sharing motif to heart. She is therefore donating part of the ticket proceeds to the sharethemeal.com platform, an initiative of the UN World Food Programme. A great gesture.
Whether you are new to the city, want to get to know different sides of Frankfurt or just want to spend a good, tasty time with nice people, whether alone, with friends or colleagues, a tour with SHARING PLATE is definitely a special experience. And if you're looking for an original birthday gift, you can give the whole thing as a gift certificate.
