The Goetheturm - One of Frankfurt's most popular destinations

The Goetheturm - One of Frankfurt's most popular destinations

Category: Favorite places

UPDATE: Unfortunately, the Goetheturm burned down completely in the early morning of October 12, 2017. But there are already plans to rebuild the tower. When and how that will be the case, is currently not yet certain.

The 43.3-meter high wooden tower on the edge of the city forest in Sachsenhausen has always been a popular destination for all Frankfurt. No wonder, because whoever manages to conquer the 196 steps of the tower is offered a wonderful view of the Frankfurt skyline and the city forest. The tower, which was built in 1931 and is one of the largest observation towers in Germany, was closed to visitors for several years, but it underwent a major renovation from 2010 to 2014. Then, in October 2017, the wooden tower fell victim to arson. Thanks to the great commitment of the city, its citizens and numerous donations, the Goethe Tower was rebuilt. Thus, since its reopening in late summer 2020, it is again open to the public always during the day from the beginning of April to the end of October. Although the tower alone offers a good reason to make a trip here, visitors are offered even more. Because to the Goetheturm belong naturally also the small excursion restaurant and the large playground. The playground covers 2.98 hectares and offers children many opportunities to let off steam. In summer, the paddling pool is a particularly popular highlight. Another special feature is the maze created in 2006 with GreenBelt animals, which was reopened after its renovation in 2022. This makes a visit from the Goetheturm just for families a special experience.

And for the physical well-being there is the inn Schmidt-Peccolo at the Goetheturm, Goetheruh. Here there are classic delicacies for the small hunger such as sausage salad, Handkäs with farmhouse bread or Frankfurter sausages with potato salad. But also main courses like Frankfurter Schnitzel with green sauce and jacket potatoes are on the menu. For those who like it sweet, dessert is a good choice. Here delicacies such as Kaiserschmarren with apple sauce are offered.

After climbing the tower and a subsequent meal in the restaurant, the city forest still offers the perfect opportunity to take a relaxing walk. All good reasons to pay a visit to a real Frankfurt landmark once again.
