The Kaisermarkt, a firm institution in Frankfurt's Bahnhofsviertel since 1999, will temporarily move to the Hauptwache. From February 11, the popular weekly market will take place for two months on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the central square in the city center. The background to this is the upcoming takeover of the market by the municipal company for ports and markets (HFM), which will continue to operate the market from April 2025 and gradually reorganize it.
The previous operating company, the Hesse State Association for Market Trade and Showmen (LMS Hessen), had to cease operating all of its weekly markets at the end of 2024 for capacity reasons. In order to provide the market vendors with an economically viable interim solution and to give HFM the necessary time to restructure the Kaisermarkt, the Hauptwache was found as an interim solution in cooperation with Frankfurt's city marketing department.
Head of Economic Affairs Stephanie Wüst emphasized the importance of the market for the station district and underlined the city's commitment: "The Kaisermarkt will continue to play an important role for the district in the future. The temporary relocation will ensure that the market continues to operate and that we keep our promise to support the Bahnhofsviertel." Local businesses, associations and institutions have also campaigned for the continuation of the market.
Tina Bergmann, operator of the "Grie-Soß-Mobil" and initiator of the move, is delighted: "We market traders stick together - that's why it was important to me to find a solution. The Hauptwache is an excellent alternative until we can return to our original location."
Eduard M. Singer, Head of City Marketing, emphasizes the cultural and social significance of the Kaisermarkt: "The market is an important meeting place for Frankfurters and travellers. The move to the Hauptwache not only enhances the square, but also brings a piece of authentic Frankfurt identity to the city center."
The Kaisermarkt will be present at the Hauptwache until the beginning of April before returning to its original location. The first market days are February 11 and 13, after which the market will follow its usual rhythm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
