Guest and overnight stays in Frankfurt am Main in June exceeded pre-pandemic levels and reached a new record high. In total, accommodation establishments recorded 539,654 guests (+ 13.7 percent year-on-year) and 950,178 overnight stays (+ 13.8 percent) in the month of June. From Germany came 345,439 guests (+ 9.8 percent) and caused 573,755 overnight stays (+ 7.7 percent). The numbers of guests from abroad increased remarkably compared to the previous year, with 194,215 guests (+ 23.7 percent) and 367,43 overnight stays (+ 21.6 percent), although not quite to the level before the start of the pandemic.
The balance of the first half of 2023 showed a total of 2,740,958 overnight guests (+ 48.2 percent compared to 2022) and 4,854,564 overnight stays (+ 40.6 percent). This means that overnight stays in the first six months were still just under 6.5 percent lower than in the first half of 2019 before the start of the pandemic. The development in the number of guests from abroad was particularly positive. Of them, 949,372 guests (+ 63.8 percent) came to Frankfurt; overnight stays rose to 1,861,524 (+ 55.6 percent).
The development of the number of guests from Germany was also pleasing. Of them, 1,791,586 overnight visitors (+ 41.2 percent) traveled to Frankfurt; overnight stays rose to 2,984,040 (+ 32.1 percent). These figures already exceeded the level of the first half of the year before the start of the pandemic and denote a new record for domestic visitors in the first half of a year.
Compared to the 278 accommodation establishments open in the same month last year, 283 establishments were open this June, offering 63,457 beds for overnight stays. The average bed occupancy rate was 42.2 percent, which translates to a room occupancy rate of 55 percent. The average length of stay for an individual overnight guest was 1.8 days.
Most international source markets show increasing overnight stays. However, there are significant differences between foreign markets:
- The U.S. remained the largest foreign source market with 292,584 overnight stays. Compared to the previous year, the number of overnight stays increased by 52.7 percent.
- Overnight stays from China increased by a remarkable 364.9 percent compared to 2022, but remained far below pre-crisis levels at 78,798. Nevertheless, the former second-largest source market is once again among the top ten markets in an international comparison.
- The largest European source markets in terms of overnight stays were the United Kingdom with 119.382 nights (+ 42.7 percent), Spain with 80,159 nights (+ 33.9 percent) and Italy with 91,028 nights (+ 63.7 percent).
- The largest growth rate among foreign overnight stays showed Taiwan with 21,407 overnight stays and 408.7 percent increase.
The share of overnight stays caused by international guests increased by 3.8 percentage points compared to the previous year and was now 38.4 percent. This means that the percentage of foreign visitors was still around 6 percent lower than before the pandemic.
These half-year figures provide a good starting point for the 2023 annual balance sheet to return to pre-pandemic results.
