It was a clear decision, even if it was unclear until the end, how it will end: Peter Feldmann is voted out as mayor of the city of Frankfurt am Main! In the referendum, 152,455 votes were needed for the deselection. According to the preliminary final result, this number was clearly exceeded: 201,825 votes were cast for Feldmann's removal from office. In addition, the necessary voter turnout, the so-called quorum, of 30 percent of all eligible voters has been reached: the turnout was as high as 41.9 percent, 11.7 percentage points above the turnout for the runoff election for mayor in 2018. This makes it clear: Feldmann will have his last day in office in the Römer on November 11. November his last working day in the Römer.
In a short statement, the still-OB thanked everyone who supported him during his time in office and all those who would not have voted for his deselection today. This means especially those who did not go to the polls, because of the votes cast more than 95 percent fell into the camp of those who voted for the deselection. The union of almost all parties that had called for the deselection - including Feldmann's own party, the SPD - was thus crowned with success today.
It is now a legal requirement that there will be new elections within four months. No later than March 12, 2023, Frankfurt will again elect a city leader. Until then, Mayor Nargess Eskandari-Grünberg (Greens) will take over the office on an interim basis. It can be assumed that the election campaign for Peter Feldmann's successor will begin shortly.
