Autumn Poems

Autumn Special Part 4

When the sun shines through the golden leaves in autumn, when summer says goodbye with a last roar or when wild autumn storms make for long cosy afternoons on the sofa, you can't always find the right words to describe this very special mood. To give you some ideas, we'll just let some great poets have their say now.

Autumn picture

This is an autumn day like none I have seen!
The air is still, as if one scarcely breathes,
And yet rustling, far and near,
The fairest fruits fall from every tree.

O disturb them not, Nature's celebration!
This is the harvest she herself holds,
For today from the branches only loosens,
What falls from the sun's mild ray.

Christian Friedrich Hebbel (1813-1863)

Autumn

Around a silencing, a decolorizing:
How softly the forest the airs caress,
Its withered leaves to flatter him;
I love this mild dying.

From hence the silent journey goes,
Love's time has faded,
The birds have sung out,
And scrawny leaves softly sink.

The birds went south,
From the decay of foliage emerge
The nests that need no more shelter,
The leaves always fall, the weary ones.

In this forest's soft murmur
It is as if I heard tidings blow,
That all dying and passing away
Only secretly silent merry exchanging.

Nikolaus Lenau

At the end of autumn

.

Scorching sense in cold heart cherishing,<x><BR</x> I travel morosely through the cold world,<x><BR</x> To end the autumn, a mist holds<x><BR</x> Moisture-enshrouded the stale region.

The winds whistle, moving to and fro
The red leaves falling from the trees,<xx>BR</x> It sighs the forest, it steams the bare field,
Now comes the worst yet, it rains.

Heinrich Heine

Declaring Autumn

Violently thus ends the year
with golden wine and fruit of the gardens,
round silent woods wonderful
and are the lonely man's companion.

Then says the countryman, It is well.
Ye evening bells long and soft
Give yet to the end glad courage.
A train of birds greets on the journey.

It is love's mild time.
In the barge down the blue river,
how beautifully picture follows picture -
that is lost in peace and silence.

Georg Trakl (1887-1914)

September morning

In the mist still the world rests,
Nor forest and meadows dream:
Soon, when the veil falls,
The blue sky unveiled,
Autumn-strong the muted world
In warm gold flow.

Eduard Mörike

Autumn

Now let summer go,
Let storm and winds blow.
If this rose remain mine,
How could I be sad?

Joseph Freiherr von Eichendorff (1788-1857)
