All the birds have finally arrived and the sun has also understood what we expect of it. Hooray! Just this past weekend I was thinking again how great it is that we are surrounded by so much green in Frankfurt. Moreover, the green nature has all kinds of things to offer, whether cyclists, walkers and in general for all people with a sense of humor.
Who now wonders how nature and humour go together, will find both en masse in Frankfurt's circular hiking trail called "GrünGürtel". If you now also discover the "rare and shy" GrünGürtelTier, invented by Frankfurt poet and satirist Robert Gernhardt, you have good cards. A little tip among friends: The rare animal likes to jump from tree to tree, swims well, prefers to feed on everything green and loves beauty. The GrünGürtel animal only lives in Frankfurt's GrünGürtel, but there it lives everywhere ;-)
Because the GrünGürtel is really something unique, which you won't find in any other city. In addition, the GrünGürtel celebrates its anniversary. Since November 2016 until the end of August, the city has put together a varied program. And it is worthwhile to note one or the other date for leisure planning already in the calendar.
Attention cyclists: wild cycling. Bicycle trip to wild corners. Meeting point: Sinai Park/Dornbusch, access path from Walter-Leiske-Strasse between house numbers 30 and 36, destination: old airfield. The route through the city and on the GrünGürtel cycle circuit leads to wild Frankfurt corners and insights. Sites of randomly created and planned wilderness lie along the 9-kilometre route. Walkers can discover green spaces past and present between 2 and 3 p.m. on 5/14. "Public green spaces past and present: Between the banks of the Main and the Alleenring. City walk from the Nice to the Grüneburgpark Meeting point: Stairway to the Untermainbrücke at the "Nice"
But what is the GrünGürtel?
A quarter of a century ago, Frankfurt am Main dared to take a big step: One third of the city area was protected from development in 1991 as the GrünGürtel Frankfurt. The landscapes surrounding the core city were now to be further developed as a coherent open space for people and nature. The idea of a GreenBelt had its forerunners as early as the 19th century, when the ramparts, which still exist and are protected today, were created from the former city fortifications. Today's avenue ring was also developed as a second green belt around 1900, followed by plans in the 1920s for a third green belt along the Nidda. By the end of the 1950s, there were concrete plans to protect a contiguous green system around the city.
What is superduper special about the Grüngürtel now?
Who hasn't heard of the GrünGürtelTier? Or discovered such sculptures that looked like the farmer forgot to close the door between the sheep and pig sty one night? ;-) The Funny Art Animals go back to famous local artists. The ME-monument, hello Selfie-Nation!!!- was created by F.K.Waechter, a member of the Frankfurt School. So: on a tour through the GrünGürtel you can have a good giggle! Last but not least at the inauguration of the 14th object of comic art, today on Friday at 4.30 p.m. in the Kurt-Halbritter-Anlage Kurt-Halbritters Barfüßer closes the so-called laughing gap at the Nidda in Rödelheim. The cartoonist and caricaturist lived for a long time in this western district.
The anticipation also fuels a new map to the green belt! With a fresh design and handy scale, the leisure map presents all cycling and walking routes, lots of service information and tips for excursions in the GrünGürtel.
