I've always wondered about that when I need to get dinner done more quickly after work. Anyone can go to a hamburger joint. I also do it now and then. Only the gastronomes of today really let themselves be great: I found what I was looking for in the Bahnhofsviertel. The operators opened their restaurant there <link http: www.maxieeisen.com _blank>"Maxie Eisen", named after a New York mafiso because the flair in the neighborhood reminded them of the city on the Hudson.
What's great and NewYork-typical on the menu? The pastrami sandwich. All vegans please kindly cover your ears now, we'll get to the salad later! Pastrami (cold cuts) had - how could it be otherwise - Eastern European Jews once introduced to New York. With the "Maxie Eisen" it found its way back across the pond to the old continent. Made from ox meat, it seems remotely reminiscent of roast beef and is so specially produced that the Frankfurt restaurant has so far been unable to source its meat from Germany but has had to cart it in from American butchers! People flock from all over Germany for a pastrami sandwich. We in Mainhattan like to think of ourselves as being close to the big Manhattan anyway, and so something really unique from NYC has found its way to us.
I also ordered at the restaurant "Maxie Eisen": Caesar Salad, which fortunately doesn't get all dolled up, but comes along the way I like it - Romaine leaves, cheese, toasted bread - ready. Now if only the dressing tasted neatly of garlic, the dish would have been properly successful. The bread served was fresh and a blast!
On days when the walk over to the main station is too far for me, I often make an impromptu stop at Sandweg. That's because at the Japanese bar <link http: shinjukusushi.just-deliver.de _blank>"Shinjuku", named after the hip Tokyo neighborhood, the chefs behind the counter are folding California rolls in front of my eyes and slicing sashimi fresh into the bento box to go. Itadakimasu = Bon Appetit!
Another North End favorite can be found right on Berger Street, among other places:<link http: www.bestworschtintown.de _blank> "Best Worscht in Town". As an old fan of Currywurst I didn't miss the chance to celebrate my birthday there already. The warnings on the menu about each curry sauce add to the thrill. The question: should I or shouldn't I choose a spicier option then becomes a test of courage like standing in front of a ravine contemplating whether to dare jump.
