Movie: Norval (Elija Wood), a DJ from L.A., travels to a small coastal town in Oregon. This is where his father (Stephen McHattie) lives, whom Norval hasn't seen in many years. To him, he is actually a stranger. But after his father writes him a letter, Norval hopes that might change. But after only a few minutes it becomes clear to him that this is not going to happen. Because his father doesn't leave a good hair on his filius, which eventually leads to wild insults. But just when Norval thinks this meeting couldn't get any worse, a tangible surprise awaits him in his daddy's secluded house - a surprise that brings bloody consequences.

With his directorial debut Come to Daddy, New Zealander Ant Timpson, producer of crowd-pleasers like Turbo Kid and Housebound, has directed a nasty little horror shocker. The film shuttles back and forth between bitterly wicked comedy and bloody thriller, and about halfway through it also has a solid surprise to offer, suddenly taking the action in a whole new direction. Timpson succeeds perfectly in building up an expectation in the viewer, which he then breaks with relish.

He gets support from a perfectly cast Elija Wood and a Stephen McHattie, who embodies the old man bullying his son at every opportunity with almost sadistic glee. Of course, we won't reveal here the direction in which the friction between the hipster DJ and his estranged father develops. But this much can be said: The more the events overlap, the bloodier and cruder the whole thing becomes.

In doing so, Timpson also aims below the belt again and again, which at times also overshoots the mark a bit. There are some scenes that just aren't funny anymore, just tasteless. But even those moments still work quite well, because they are embedded in such a delightfully weird framework. Come to Daddy may not be a masterpiece. But a damn entertaining genre work this flick certainly is. For this, there is clearly a: worth seeing!

Picture + Sound: Although quite a few scenes take place in the dark, the picture quality leaves a good overall impression in terms of sharpness and contrast. In terms of detail, there are a few minimal point deductions, but this is made up for, especially in the brighter outdoor scenes. The audio is in a decent DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio mix, which scores with some well-placed surround effects and powerfully mixed dialogue.

Extras: Bonus material is unfortunately - apart from a couple of trailers - not available.

Conclusion: Come to Daddy pleases with a heavy dose of black humor, a successful twist in the middle of the film and a wonderfully weird acting Elija Wood. Although there are also some weaker or too exaggerated moments in this grotesque horror film, but the entertainment value remains pleasantly high for long stretches. The Blu-ray presents the film in good picture and sound quality. Unfortunately, there is no bonus material. Nevertheless, for those who like it weird and gory, this disc is clearly: recommended!
