When a tiny ladybug on a sneaky trip to escape a horde of red ants ends up in a cardboard box being shipped to the Caribbean, his dad does everything he can to follow him and bring his offspring back home. In fact, he manages to do it, but the adventure is far from over. For the two befriend a group of Caribbean ladybugs whose picturesque home is threatened by humans. A construction project could destroy the beetles' home forever. With the help of their loyal friends from home, a black ant and a small spider, the ladybugs hatch a plan to save their new friends' paradise.
Nearly ten years ago, Hélène Giraud and Thomas Szabo allowed viewers an original as well as endearing glimpse into the lives of insects with the animated series Minuscule. In 78 clips, each 4 to 6 minutes long, real landscape shots were mixed with animated insects. The series was a resounding success, and not only in France, which is why the two filmmakers felt vindicated in their plan to make a feature film about the world of cute insects. The result was called The Tiny Ones - Operation Sugar Bowl and attracted around 5 million viewers to cinemas worldwide. So it's no surprise that the two filmmakers now get to serve us a follow-up.
The Tiny Ones - Adventures in the Caribbean moves the action to Guadeloupe, where the lovable heroes from Part 1 can join the audience in a whole new world. This is again filled with fascinating landscape shots, delightfully quirky humour and a smattering of well-dosed suspense. Humans, who only appeared on the fringes in the first film, take on a much larger role here in the final act. However, the makers also consistently do without dialogues here, which keeps the whole thing its special charm. However, the film gets a very clear ecological message through the interference of the humans, which was not present in this form in the first film.
You just have to love these tiny creatures. True, this second cinematic adventure doesn't quite measure up to its award-winning predecessor. Nevertheless, this animated adventure is once again a very original, detailed, subtle and extremely funny pleasure that can be recommended not only to children, but also to adults. Absolutely worth seeing
