Experience art and finally visit the clubs of our city again - this is finally possible on the weekend of July 9 - 11 thanks to an art project of the SCHIRN Kunsthalle. The exhibition "Distant Bodies Dancing Eyes" focuses on the music video as an artistic genre. And where better to present the interplay of art viewing and sound than in local clubs? For three days you are invited to finally move from club to club again to experience selected music videos by 25 international artists on the big screen and in optimal sound quality. The participating clubs are GIBSON CLUB, HAFEN 2, KUNSTVEREIN FAMILIE MONTEZ, NACHTLEBEN, ROBERT JOHNSON, SILBERGOLD, TANZHAUS WEST as well as YACHTKLUB.
All of the music videos on display are recent productions from the last two decades, the oldest dating back to 2004, and have been selected to also perfectly match the location in which they are being shown. The exhibition presents artists who work predominantly with the media of photography and video art, including, among others, Doug Aitkens, Phil Collins, Gabriela Friðriksdóttir, Arthur Jafa, Carsten Nicolai, Laure Prouvost & Ciarán Wood, Wolfgang Tillmans, Kara Walker and Ari Marcopoulos or Colin Whitaker. It is not uncommon for the films developed to accompany the music to contain elements from their artistic creations and allow the respective signature to be recognized. Musically, the focus is particularly on R'n'B, pop and electronic pieces.
Especially in the 1980s, music videos became known through channels like MTV, set a variety of creative impulses and brought together artists from different fields. In recent years, visual artists have increasingly contributed moving images to music. This also reflects the growing interest in video and sound in contemporary art as well as the close connection and mutual attention between music and art creators. The music videos in the exhibition place social conflicts and upheavals at the center of the action, design mysterious places and utopian scenarios, question temporal, spatial, and physical constants, or penetrate deep into human emotional worlds. Under overarching themes such as Utopia, Love, Gender, Social Conflict, Social Exclusion, Technology, Humanity or Science Fiction, three video works can be seen at each of the participating exhibition venues, which can be visited in a free tour.
