42nd Possmann apple blossom hike in the arboretum

42nd Possmann apple blossom hike in the arboretum

Category: More

Everything points to a good scattered apple harvest!

Every year, cider lovers ask themselves anew, how will the next apple harvest turn out? This year, the wine press Possmann invited representatives of the press and interested customers for the first time to an inspection of the arboretum at the gates of Eschborn. Together with the fruit cultivation experts and farmers responsible here, the charming biotope was walked through and the strewing fruit pieces present in it were inspected at close quarters and then assessed.

The traditional annual apple blossom walk was organised by the Possmann family wine press house for the 42nd time this year. The expert verdict is pleasing and gives a positive forecast for the coming orchard harvest.

The arboretum - a unique landscape

.Together with fruit-growing experts and the significantly responsible landscape managers and farmers, senior Günter Possmann led around 40 interested people in warm, sunny spring weather over the particularly historically interesting area. The 76 hectare park-like site was used as an air base before and after the war and was only reforested by the state of Hesse at the beginning of the 1980s and transformed into an extraordinary landscape gem with over 600 species of trees and shrubs, some of which are exotic.

The deputy chairman responsible for the management of the apple trees on behalf of Hessenforst, Gerhard Wachinger, led the participants through the blossoming plantation to the individual apple pieces and explained the measures taken on the existing landscapes. Together with Manfred Völkel from the Office for Landscape Management and Agriculture in Wiesbaden, the participants were able to see for themselves the pleasing state of care and pruning of the various apple tree varieties, which are a good 25 years old. The fruit growing consultant explained to the participants during the hike that in the end only 10% of the apple blossom is necessary for a full yield. "There shouldn't be too much negative happening with the advanced current weather conditions and the very good fertilization of the blossoms," was Völkel's verdict after checking the inflorescences on various high and half-stems.

Good apple harvest likely!

Decisive for the positive harvest forecast was the weather course so far, which has supported the apple blossom again this year. That's what makes cider experts so confident. "I don't have to worry about the cider supply for 2015 ", Peter Possmann summed up after weighing up all the framework conditions relevant for the apple yield.

At Possmann, they are looking forward to the apples harvested in the arboretum, a mixture of good varieties that are particularly suitable for pressing.

More than two-thirds of the apples processed at Possmann come from the meadow orchards of the local region. The family-owned press house attaches great importance to apples of the old high-stem varieties, which taste excellent and are particularly valuable due to their health-promoting phenols. First and foremost the fruit from the Taunus, the Odenwald and the Wetterau. These naturally pure apples also make Possmann's cider so digestible. That is why the preservation and care of the local orchards and meadows is of immense importance for the traditional Frankfurt drink and is supported by Possmann in the long term. Wildlife also uses a biotope such as the arboretum in great diversity, which serves them as an exemplary habitat and retreat.
