There are places in Frankfurt that rightly deserve the designation "jewel". The restaurant "Blaues Wasser" undoubtedly belongs to such locations, which one would not really believe from the outside. Located directly in the Osthafen, it has a rather grey industrial atmosphere, which is underlined by trucks driving over the worn asphalt. But as soon as you pass the entrance area and step out onto the outdoor terrace, the city noise is immediately forgotten and you are captured by a Mediterranean flair that creates a relaxed holiday mood.
The three managing directors Goran Petreski, Matthias Martinsohn and Rakesh Bhatnagar implemented a convincing, but definitely risky restaurant concept on the former site of a nudist club about two years ago. After all, the operation of such an open-air location cannot be maintained all year round. And since the restaurant can currently only be operated during the summer season and the opening hours are also strongly dependent on the weather, the prices must of course be somewhat higher in order to be able to cover all costs. As a guest, you have to be prepared for that. But, and this is a high concern of the operators, it should be offered for the money you spend here, also a corresponding quality, which of course should be recognizable not only in the ambience, but also in food and drinks.
And that's exactly what seems to have succeeded. Because after only two successful seasons, the "Blaue Wasser" is already one of Frankfurt's most popular outdoor locations. The restaurant in the upper terrace area is well booked - a reservation is definitely advisable here before a visit. In addition to the "catch of the day", the menu offers various starters such as hummus with mixed olives, salmon tartare ceviche style or Parma ham with marinated melon. For meat lovers, there is best Black Angus steak from Australia, grilled on the charcoal grill, or French corn poulard breast. And vegetarian dishes like the veggie variations are also on the menu.
A good selection of drinks is not only available at the indoor bar, but also at the red Wandelbar, which is a real eye-catcher after dark. And the River Bar also offers the right selection for the perfect sundowner with cocktails, long drinks and wines. Although it is not possible to eat in the beautiful area directly on the banks of the Main (apart from tarte flambée, which is offered here from Wednesday to Sunday), there is hardly a better place for a relaxed after-work drink or for a nice end to the day with friends.
Conversion measures, through which the "Blue Water" can be opened regardless of the weather, are planned. But when they can be implemented has not yet been determined. Until then, visitors will have to take every opportunity during the summer season to visit this extraordinary location. A small tip: The opening hours are not only dependent on the weather, but also on any events that may be taking place.
