The double double-breasted
Marita Baumstieger is one of the few chimney sweeps in Frankfurt who sweeps chimneys, cleans fireplaces and tiled stoves, and provides energy-saving advice. After her 3-year apprenticeship, the Frankfurt native has remained true to her profession and has been practicing it for 20 years. She only broke into a freshly tiled roof and fell almost 6 metres once - during her apprenticeship. Since then, she has moved skilfully and is very concerned about safety. She loves her job and occasionally allows herself a short rest on the roofs of the Main metropolis, where she finds time to let her gaze wander into the distance to enjoy the view.
A chimney sweep is a profession at whose personified sight all people spontaneously rejoice, yet hardly anyone knows why the chimney sweep in particular is a symbol of luck. The explanation lies in the history says Baumstieger: "Because uncleaned chimneys in the at that time still thatched-roofed houses often led to fires, those house owners whose houses did not burn down, because the chimneys were swept, had luck: A luck that the chimney sweep was there."
For the campaign "Clothes make the man" Marita Baumstieger exchanged the black chimney sweep double-breasted suit, together with soot bag and measuring instruments with Stephan Görners white double-breasted suit made of flannel from the cloth weaver Holland & Sherry. A prima swap finds the tailor from Frankfurt, who accompanied the photo shoot with photographer Nikita Kulikov. The campaign involves photographing twelve people with unusual professions in bespoke suits or costumes each year. "Recognition, appreciation and respect for these women and men is the message here, because without these people a big city would not function at all," says Stephan Görner.
Marita Baumstieger is enthusiastic about the white double-breasted suit and will wear it at the third Charity Gala on November 11 at the Gesellschaftshaus Palmengarten. "The gala is public and open to everyone" says Sven Müller, head of organisation for the event. Even Prime Minister Volker Bouffier has already given his promise for the patronage. A ticket incl. champagne reception, 3-course menu, exquisite wines costs 250 euros in the ballroom. In the gallery with the same services 195 euros.
A VIP fashion show, various bands and a DJ round off the program. The donations and proceeds from the raffle will be given to the Leberecht Foundation, which cares for needy children and their families - and has done so for more than 60 years. And of course, all the amteur models will be represented in their tailored suits or costumes, because after all, they get to keep the fine threads.
