Frankfurt Open Air Cinema enters sixth round

It's hard to imagine the city's summer event calendar without it: Frankfurt Open Air Cinema! In the first five seasons, the Open Air Cinema stood out in particular by choosing venues that will no longer exist in this way in the future. Last year it was the university campus at the Bockenheimer Warte, the year before that the films were shown in the skyscraper canyons where the FOUR is currently being built. And before that it was the inner courtyard of the former Volkstheater, where the Museum of Romanticism is currently being built. This year, the team has once again chosen a place steeped in history that has already undergone many changes, but which we hope we won't have to say goodbye to so soon. We are talking about the Bethmann Museum Pavilion, which has been used as a club for many years - once as the Odeon, now as Le Panther. The beautiful outdoor terrace of the classicist-style villa in the Friedberger Anlage will serve as the venue for this year's open-air cinema on 15 evenings from 04 July to 4 August.

Built in 1808, the villa once served as an exhibition hall for the famous Ariadne von Dannecker. Parties have been held there since the nineties. Just a few months ago, the terrace was lavishly renovated and transformed into a chic oasis in the heart of Frankfurt.

Fittingly for the Villa's club history, this year's open-air cinema then also starts with a homage to the 90s: the opening film Mid90s sensitively portrays a skater clique around five teenagers in Los Angeles. Debut director Jonah Hill has preserved the vibe of his youth between slackerism and drug excesses in the film. It's a coming-of-age drama that will make you nostalgic, if only for the outstanding soundtrack.

Continues with arthouse hits and crowd-pleasers of various kinds. Numerous Oscar® winners romp through this year's program, starting with the historical drama The Favourite, in which Yorgos Lanthimos, one of the most acclaimed arthouse directors of recent years, has assembled a superb acting cast around Olivia Colman and Emma Stone. The documentary Free Solo impresses with footage of spectacular climbing expeditions in which extreme athlete Alex Hunnold travels without a belay. And of course Border is not to be missed: Already risen from absolute insider tip to indie hit, the fairy-tale mystery drama about Tina and Vore's animalistic sense of smell is unlikely to be seen again in Frankfurt any time soon.

On the final weekend, the open-air cinema ends with two heartbreaking films about the beauty and sorrow of summer love: who doesn't dream of Italian summer nights with the bittersweet sensuality of Call Me By Your Name and La Grande Bellezza. But the classicist flair of the le Panther terrace, surrounded by pretty gardens and a park, makes the longing not quite so great.

The le Panther is located in the middle of the Friedberger Anlage (address: Seilerstraße 34, 60313 Frankfurt am Main), just a five-minute walk from the Konstablerwache. The box office opens at 7:30 pm on the respective screening evening. The film starts when it is sufficiently dark. Advance sales have already begun. In addition, tickets are available at the box office at a price of 10 euros, reduced tickets are available for 8 euros.

All foreign-language films run in the original version with German subtitles. As always, Chez Vivi will provide culinary delights with their Crêpes and galettes. Cold drinks of all kinds will also be available. Freiluftkino Frankfurt is a project of LICHTER Filmkultur e.V. and Daniel Brettschneider
