Pilot project 'The Frankfurt Prototype' combines architecture and art

On October 2, 2024, the experimental building "The Frankfurt Prototype" will open in the inner courtyard of the Senckenberg Research Institute and Nature Museum Frankfurt. The pilot project, which will be accessible for three months, combines the teaching of architecture and art for the first time and is aimed at contemporary education and research at the Städelschule.

The building includes a small market hall on the first floor, which functions as a "public living room" and is intended to be used in a variety of ways - as a theater stage, cinema, market for sustainable products and exhibition space. The second floor houses living and working spaces for students. An innovative "green urban filter" complements the concept and demonstrates sustainable visions.

The building was developed by students from the Städelschule and the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences together with engineers, architects and researchers from the Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung. The aim of the project is to design a sustainable and affordable urban building typology that promotes social cohesion. Recycled steel and used wood were used in the construction to reduce CO2 emissions.

Of particular note is the arrival of the "Center for Contemporary Arts Afghanistan (CCAA)" from Kabul, which is moving into temporary workspaces on the second floor. The initiative of Afghan painter Rahraw Omarzad offers twenty students in exile a platform for their artistic work.

The patron of the project is Frankfurt's Lord Mayor Mike Josef. The experimental building "The Frankfurt Prototype" will be on display and accessible for three months from October 2, 2024 in the inner courtyard of the Senckenberg Research Institute and Natural History Museum Frankfurt.
