Sheep as environmentally friendly lawnmowers in Frankfurt Racecourse Park

Sheep as environmentally friendly lawnmowers in Frankfurt Racecourse Park

Frankfurt is once again relying on an environmentally friendly method of landscape conservation: from the weekend of October 19 and 20, around 120 ewes and 60 lambs from the Best Farm sheep farm in Unterliederbach will be grazing on the sandy grasslands in Rennbahnpark. These areas are characterized by their low nutrient content and high sand content and provide a habitat for many endangered plant and animal species.

The grazing, which was already successfully carried out last year, will last around two to three weeks. The sheep, especially Pyrenean sheep, take on the role of natural "lawnmowers" by eating grass and plants. This keeps the ground open and creates ideal conditions for other characteristic sandy grassland plants to establish themselves.

A shepherd looks after the animals on a daily basis and ensures that they are well looked after. The animals are housed in a former horse stable at night, while during the day an electric fence ensures that they remain in their assigned areas. Visitors to the park are asked not to disturb or feed the sheep. Dogs must also be kept on a lead during this time so as not to endanger the animals.

With this measure, the City of Frankfurt is promoting the ecological maintenance of its green spaces and helping to preserve important habitats. Signs with the shepherd's contact details are displayed on site so that contact can be made quickly if necessary.
