A visit to the Museum of Communication

A visit to the Museum of Communication

Category: Museums & Art

Communication between people has many faces - and a long, interesting history. This is what the Museum of Communication tries to convey in an interesting, but also in a playful way. This already becomes clear when you encounter the sheep made from old telephones in the entrance area, the first eye-catcher in the multi-award-winning museum building. But the building, which was opened in 1958 as the Federal Postal Museum, has much more to offer on its four floors. In the basement, there is 2,500 square metres of the new permanent exhibition, which has been delighting visitors since the summer of 2017.

Round thirteen years after the last redesign of the permanent exhibition, the museum's basement is now all about retelling media history(s). Already familiar exhibits will be presented in a completely new way and supplemented by numerous new exhibits. A clear structure has been deliberately avoided. Instead, visitors are invited to create their own individual links between the 44 thematic islands, which are divided into four phenomena: EMPLOYMENT, CONNECTION, CONTROL and PARTICIPATION. This makes a visit to the permanent exhibition always new, exciting and surprising.

But besides the permanent exhibition, the museum has other highlights to offer. The museum café (definitely try the homemade brownies!), the children's workshop and the area with the temporary exhibitions are also always worth a visit. The children's workshop on the first floor offers young museum visitors the opportunity to playfully reinforce what they have learned on their tour of the museum and to experiment on their own. This not only increases the fun factor, but also ensures that what they learn sticks with them for longer.

Although there is a wide range of activities for children and young people, a visit to the Museum of Communication is of course always worthwhile for adults too. For the permanent exhibitions that are put on here are always educational, original and extremely entertaining. For it is not only that interesting topics such as the effect of advertising campaigns, messages in bottles, love letters, the relationship between man and machine or a Jewish century on shellac and vinyl are chosen for the exhibitions. The extremely creative implementation of the respective presentations is also always a real experience.

The Museum of Communication shows very well that imparting knowledge and playful entertainment do not have to exclude each other in any case, but can also complement each other perfectly. In addition, it becomes clear here that even simple things from everyday life can have an important meaning, especially when they are a means of communication. A very beautiful museum, which inspires not only architecturally. We like to come here again and again! You too?
