The Liebieghaus Sculpture Collection - Jewel on the Museumsufer

The Liebieghaus Sculpture Collection - Jewel on the Museumsufer

Category: Museums & Art

The Liebieghaus opened in 1909. It is housed in the villa of the Bohemian textile manufacturer Baron Heinrich von Liebieg, built in 1896 by the Munich architect Romeis.

The baron transferred his house to the city of Frankfurt at a preferential price on the condition that an art museum be established in it.

The foundation of the collection was initially formed by sculptures from various Frankfurt collections, which were supplemented by donations and acquisitions from the city.

Georg Swarzenski, from 1905 director of the Städelsches Kunstinstitut and founding director of the Liebieghaus, succeeded within a few years in building up a collection of more than 350 sculptures, including ancient as well as medieval and baroque works of art.

In 1990, a second wing dedicated to antiquity was opened, increasing the exhibition space to 2,000 square meters.

Today, the museum is one of the most important sculpture museums internationally.

2000 works present 4400 years of sculpture: from Ancient Egypt to Greek and Roman Antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and masterpieces of the Baroque and Classicism.

The Liebieghaus, located at the end of the Museum Embankment, is a jewel in the important museum landscape of the Main metropolis.

It also delights with its idyllic garden - an oasis of peace and contemplation.
