It was one of the very big highlights of the grand opening weekend of the new Old Town at the end of September 2018: the fascinating drone show "Sternenbilder - Eine Symphonie für die Frankfurter Altstadt". For this so far unique show, Tourismus+Congress GmbH Frankfurt am Main and Atelier Markgraph were awarded the Red Dot Design Award "Best of the Best" in the category Brands & Communication. The Red Dot Design Award is a globally renowned design competition and has been honouring the best work in the field of product design and communication design every year since 1954. In 2019, the international Red Dot jury selected the winners of the year from 8600 submissions.
At the festivities for the opening of the Old Town, over one hundred LED drones merged together with light shows, specially composed music and voice passages to create a multimedia homage to Frankfurt before the eyes of an enthusiastic audience. The narrative center of the choreography, which took place over the nighttime Main River between the Eisernem Steg and Untermainbrücke bridges, featured not only outstanding personalities and figures of the city, but also defining events and landmarks.
Stefan Weil, managing director and CCO of Atelier Markgraph, says of the creative process behind the spectacle, "Frankfurt is a place of diversity and contrasts. Here, dialogue has been lived and celebrated with aplomb for centuries. We use the latest generation of technology to create an iconographic performance that pays homage to this cosmopolitan attitude of Frankfurt in poetic imagery."
Thomas Feda, Managing Director of Tourismus+Congress GmbH Frankfurt am Main, added: "The new Old Town stands for a harmonious interplay of historical elements and contemporary architecture. In this field of tension, the drone show ‚Sternenbilder' was the impressive crowning glory of the inauguration celebrations and I am extremely pleased about this wonderful award."
Stefan Weil and Thomas Feda accepted the award at the award ceremony on November 1 at the Konzerthaus in Berlin.
