Berger Street merchants think about the environment
Plastic waste is a huge problem for our environment. Endless amounts of plastic pollute our oceans and more plastic waste is produced every day. Given the scale, it makes you wonder: what can I do about it? As long as everyone is asking this question, nothing will change, of course. But often big changes are already started very small. And that's precisely why an action like the "I'm with you: plastic-free" campaign launched today on Berger Straße cannot be praised highly enough. And it is an incentive for all of us to simply join in.
If not all retailers can do without plastic bags and customers like to go shopping spontaneously without their own bag, innovative approaches are needed - not bans or paper bags as a substitute. The association of commercial enterprises and traders on Frankfurt's Berger Straße presents a charming solution with the pilot project ‚I'm in: plastic-free!': a bookcase, just for bags - The Bag Stations. Customers should use them in the future like a bookcase, only for shopping bags.
Ten stores are taking care of from the unpacking store Gramm. Exact to the department storeHESSEN take care of the stations. These look like a rummage basket with a sign, from which customers can take a bag free of charge, even if they are not shopping in the store in question. As with the bookcase, the idea lives from the cycle. If you are in the area again, you bring one or more unused and clean bags from home and put them in the station.
The campaign runs from 7 June to 17 September 2017 and is accompanied by events - such as the open air cinema on 15 July, the clean up action of Berger Straße with ffmtipptopp on 16 August and culminates at the district festival on 17 September with the plastic-free dinner from the neighbourhood.
A survey of merchants and customers will find out if the campaign is helping to strengthen Berger Street. Then the group will meet for a maneuver critique with the goal of discussing how to move forward and improve the approach for scalability or new products like reusable cups.
Overall, the campaign aims to strengthen Berger Street as a vibrant shopping street and living space, thus also promoting the coalescence of the city's longest shopping street. The topic of plastic-free shopping already generated a lot of media attention during an hR-INFO event in March this year.

Sunday, September 17 (12 - 17 h): Plastic-free!Dinner on the Berger
Near Berger Straße, on the locally christened ‚Neebplatz' there will be a long table with traders, business people, fellow participants and the SG Bornheim - plastic-free, of course. Everyone brings something, it is not so easy without plastic. Those who really bring food completely plastic-free will get a small thank-you. On the side, a senior rollator music group will probably provide some atmosphere.
