Cherry and strawberry picking at Obsthof am Steinberg

Cherry and strawberry picking at Obsthof am Steinberg

Mmmmmh, delicious! Fresh organic cherries and wonderfully delicious strawberries - just the thing for this weather. And the fruity treats taste even better when you pick them yourself. You now have the opportunity to do so: on Saturday, May 26, 2018, at 9 a.m., the Obsthof am Steinberg will open its first-ever organic cherry pick-your-own. Sweet cherry growing has been in Schneider's family tradition since great-grandfather's time. "This year our organic sweet cherries have set particularly well due to the warm and frost-free blossoming weather", says Andreas Schneider. He has more than 20 early sweet cherry varieties in controlled organic cultivation. They ripen from the 1st to the 4th cherry week. Therefore the offer of the cherry self-picking is limited to only a few weeks - depending on the ripening process to 1 to 2 weeks. Interested customers register at the farm shop with the containers they have brought with them and are then instructed by a member of staff. Participation is at your own risk. Unfortunately, climbing the cherry trees is prohibited, because the branches of the sweet cherries are too thin and can break off when climbing. However, the majority of our small-crowned organic sweet cherries can be comfortably harvested from the ground. Our picking sleds are available to help guests with the harvest," explains Andreas Schneider.

Saturday May 26 and Sunday May 27, the cherry orchard will be open from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. for self-picking - subject to change. Further dates and information available on telephone enquiry to the farm shop on 06101 41522 daily from 11am to 5pm.

Prices: 10 <x>amp</x>euro;/kg.

But it's not just the cherries that want to be picked. Schneider's delicious organic free-range strawberries are also finally ripe. Due to the nationwide increasing trend towards protected cultivation (in greenhouses and tunnels as well as under foils) and the associated early harvest, the nationwide strawberry harvest has been under pressure for a while. Andreas Schneider and his team do not follow this trend and continue to build persistently on "normal" free-range berries with full aroma quality. Due to the heat and the beneficial thundershowers of the past days, 5 aroma varieties are already ripening: "Honoeye" - the Riesling type among strawberries, "Clery" - the proven early variety, "Vima Zanta" - the delicious strawberry fruity one, "Manille" - the wild strawberry aromatic one and a new test variety which is currently on the test bench of the controlled organic fruit farm. 14 strawberry varieties ripen at the fruit farm on the Steinberg.

The strawberry self-picking (prices: 3 <x>ampersand</x>euro;/500g, from 2,5kg - 2,75 <x>ampersand</x>euro;/500g, from 5kg - 2,25 <x>ampersand</x>euro;/500g and from 10kg - 1,75 <x>ampersand</x>euro;/500g) is expected to start on Saturday, 26. May 2018, with Schneider's blackcurrants ripening a few weeks later. Connoisseurs freeze the strawberries and later prepare fine jams from them together with the black vitamin balls. For more info, customers can call the strawberry phone number 06101 41522 daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
