The Theatrallalla is known for being a little more colourful and quirky, and for combining culture and hearty fun in an atmospheric setting. And Thomas Bäppler-Wolf, artistic director of the theatre and star of the stage as Bäppi La Belle, is known for his love of new challenges and unusual experiments. And so now the famous operetta DIE FLEDERMAUS by Johann Strauss has made it to the cabaret and dialect stage in Frankfurt's Nordend.
Who now expects a production true to the work, has never been to the Theatrallalla. Who, on the other hand, fears that the operetta here simply degenerates into a trashy machination, knows Bäppi badly. Because Thomas Bäppler-Wolf is generally a great friend of opera. He therefore naturally treats Johann Strauss' classic with the respect it deserves - even if, in Bäppi's case, this is of course accompanied by a proper wink. It's quirky, somewhat idiosyncratic and very colourful. But the whole thing is also very charming and especially musically pleasingly convincing, even if there are no professional opera voices to be heard. Even admirers of classical productions have to admit: You just have to like this FLEDERMAUS.
Because until 09 June you get to see a passionate, loving, hilarious and very weird-playful interpretation of the operetta first performed in 1874. Thomas Bäppler-Wolf, who also directed the show, translated the plot into Hessian and adapted it to Frankfurt's current events. In the finale of the second act, "Champagner der Erste" naturally becomes "Äppler, der Erste", and in the first appearance of the second act, the Theatrallalla does not say "Ein Souper heut uns winkt", but "Ebbelwei uns heut` da winkt". And the last dialogue in the third act is not simply recited, but turns into a real Hessian carnival speech.
But otherwise everything remains as usual: Actually Gabriel von Eisenstein (Bastian Korff) should go to prison for eight days. But he lets himself be persuaded by Dr. Falke (Alexander Beck), whom he played a nasty trick on three years ago at the travesty club "Die Fledermaus", to accompany him to the grand masquerade ball of the cider landlady Lia Orlovsky (Bäppi La Belle). Meanwhile, Gabriel's wife Rosalind (also Bäppi) is ensnared by her gardener Alfred (also Alexander Beck), who pretends to be Rosalind's husband for love in front of the prison warden Frank (Stefan Peschek) and wanders behind bars instead of Gabriel. But of course he shall not escape his just punishment. Dr. Falke has planned his long overdue revenge for the masked ball. And there Rosalind as a Saxon singer and maid Adele (Eva Völl) also play an important role.
The operetta's catchy songs, delightfully quirky costumes and witty dialogue are, of course, instrumental in making this version of FLEDERMAUS such a success. But what is really decisive are the actors on stage who, even in the most bizarre costumes, always strive to offer the audience perfect entertainment in all respects. Whether it is Bäppi La Belle himself, who brings his parade role as a diva to perfection here, or the priceless facial expressions of Bastian Korff, the wonderfully pointed acting of Alexander Beck or the accentuated comedy of Stefan Peschek. In terms of acting, they all make the play a real pleasure. And Eva Völl, who is most convincing vocally, Theatrallalla fans have taken to their hearts at the latest since the wonderful revue "Verliebt, verlobt, verheiratet" and its sequel.
You can feel as an audience how much pleasure this operetta gives to all involved. And not least through a good portion of self-irony it becomes clear that perfection in the classical sense was not the goal here. But to offer two hours of really good entertainment to all those who love DIE FLEDERMAUS, but also to all those who otherwise don't know much about operetta. And that succeeded all along the line. And for all those who find this production a little too shrill, Bäppi promises psychological counselling after the play. So there is really no reason to miss this musical fun!
