The Old Airfield in Bonames is a very popular destination, especially on weekends. No wonder, it is wonderful to walk over the former runway or roll with inliners. A visit to the green armadillo, which sits here on a bridge, is also always nice. Whether by bike, on foot, by public transport or by car - the Old Airfield is easy to reach and is a perfect starting point or destination for longer tours along the GreenBelt. Perfect, therefore, because one could fortify oneself here in the Tower Café for the excursion. But the café, which is housed in the former airport building, has also been closed for quite some time, so that there has been no gastronomic offer at the popular local recreation area for months. This did not seem to change for the foreseeable future, as the previous operator of the Tower Café has terminated the lease. But at least for the coming months there is good news:
Since Saturday, May 22, there is at least again a small gastronomic offer at the Old Airfield Kalbach-Bonames in the form of an out-of-home sale. The Office for Building and Real Estate (ABI) has leased an area for a sales stand to Lena Roie. "We were surprised that the previous tenant did not want to continue the catering business," says Jan Schneider, head of department for construction and real estate. "I am therefore pleased that the ABI has found a solution for the summer at short notice. The gastronomic supply of the popular excursion destination is secured, no one has to go home hungry and thirsty." Operator Roie emphasizes, "We want to create a place that invites you to linger, but at the same time preserve the natural appearance at the Old Airfield."
Following the termination of the lease by the former operator, the City of Frankfurt got the area back just a few weeks ago. As a temporary offer until the end of October, mobile stands will offer, among other things, bratwurst, crêpes, ice cream, snacks, cold drinks as well as coffee and tea. But everything will only be available "to go", as there will be no seating for the time being due to the current Corona regulations. Also, no alcoholic beverages will be sold for the time being. Depending on the development of the pandemic situation, this may change in the course of the next few weeks. Open until the end of August, the stalls will be open daily from 11am to 9pm. In September they close at 8 pm, in October at 7 pm. The ABI will provide portable toilets.
At the former airport buildings, the ABI is looking at what structural work is needed to allow continued operation after the previous lease ends. When the repairs are complete, the restaurant space is to be re-leased. It should be taken into account that the old airfield is located in a landscape conservation area and is not only an attractive local recreation destination, but also an important place for nature and the environment, which should be further developed in the coming years. After the US Army gave up military use of the site, the city bought it in the 1990s and began redeveloping it in 2003. Among other things, facilities for environmental education and a fire brigade museum are located there.
