Finally a home again: Frankfurt woman fights for new U60311

Frankfurt woman Olga Ewert has had a big goal in mind for three years. She wants to reopen a club in the premises of the former electro club U60311. "This place means something to me. It has a history. The acoustics there were unique," she still raves today. The space has been empty since it closed in early 2013. Only a few ghostly legacies of the former operator tell of the space's troubled past. An unbearable state, finds Olga Ewert.

2015 she finally started a petition, wanted her club, her U60311 back. More than 5000 people signed. But her commitment to reviving the U60311 began earlier - and she had no shortage of ideas: in April 2013, she proposed to the former operators of the U60311 a museum for electronic music in the premises and also wanted to re-establish the place as a venue. At the same time, Alex Azary, Talla 2XLC from Technoclub and Stefan Weil were also campaigning for Frankfurt, as one of the birthplaces of techno, to finally create a place where the history of electronic music could be experienced. Their plans, however, are already quite a bit further along: actually, the opening of the MOMEM, a museum all about electronic music, was already planned for this year on the mezzanine level of the Hauptwache. The delay in the start due to construction work by the public transport company is annoying, but at least the MOMEM is considered to be desired and approved by the city. This also pleases Olga Ewert, who does not see the project as competition. "On the contrary: we are all united by our love of music. The wish of all U60311 fans and the operators of the MOMEM is to realize both the museum for electronic music at the Hauptwache and to use the premises of the U60311 as a venue."

On the future use of the U60311, however, the city, as the owner of the space, has so far remained silent. Olga Ewert, who wants to rent the space together with a business partner, is in constant negotiations with all responsible parties, but nothing really wants to happen. Some people are critical of the idea of opening another club in the middle of the city. "Many simply have prejudices," says Ewert. But music doesn't belong on the margins. After all, it is possible to talk about issues such as appropriate closing times so as not to interfere with business operations. For years, Frankfurt was considered one of the pilgrimage sites for fans of electronic music from all over the world. "The U60311 was known beyond the borders of the country and was mentioned in the same breath as Detroit and Berlin. Today, if I want to go away, I have to travel, for example to Amsterdam. Here it is possible to experience music in the middle of the city. Last but not least, this is an economic advantage. A club like the U60311 would also attract tourists, I am convinced of that."
