For months, cyclists traveling along the banks of the Main River in particular have repeatedly had to plan detours, as sections or bridges are closed due to construction work. Now there is good news in time for the holidays, at least in one important place: The footbridge on the Main-Neckar Bridge has been open since Wednesday, December 21. Thus, an important and attractive connection across the Main River is finally available to pedestrian and bicycle traffic again.
The Office of Road Construction and Development has laid a new surface. The installed gratings are made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic and are very slip-resistant. People with a fear of heights can walk on the footbridge without worrying: Because the mesh size of the gratings is so narrow with 25 x 25 millimeters that it visually gives a closed picture.
Since mid-August, the footbridge was closed. The Mainova subsidiary NRM Netzdienste Rhein-Main GmbH had first dismantled a power line. This was directly followed by ASE's work on the footbridge. The bundling of both work steps saved time and reduced the closure of the bridge to a minimum.
A fundamental overhaul of the entire footbridge on the Main-Neckar Bridge is prospectively required in the course of this decade. Planning for this has already begun. An execution time window is not yet fixed.
