Frankfurt Fastnacht at the weekend - The highlights

Mayor hands over city hall key to the fools/Actual bribery of an Offenbach-born city councillor with Eintracht free tickets?

(kus) "Frankfurts Fastnacht, die gefällt - Spaß und Tanz im Narrenzelt!" is the motto of this year's campaign. It started on Saturday with the storming of the city hall.

Lord Mayor Peter Feldmann surrendered to the carnival superiority after a witty battle of words with the president of the great council, Axel Heilmann. He handed over the city hall key to the prince and princess in the context of a colorful program and instructed the gatekeepers, "one may open the doors and gates to the Römer now and let the foolish people into the Römerhallen".

First, however, probably had to convince a city councilman born in Offenbach with Eintracht free tickets to agree to the decision to hand over. "He now gets to see some proper football," Feldmann was amused in the duel of words.

Even before that, a city councilman had been caught blocking in the "Handkäs-Streik"". Only after "Rippche und Kraut" he gave his consent to the handing over of the town hall. Inside was then celebrated, eaten and drunk.

On Sunday, the hustle and bustle continued with the great carnival parade: 92 clubs and associations, 2893 participants, 41 guards, 16 bands and marching bands, 448 minstrels, 33 motif floats, 40 joke and committee floats, 6 horses and 6 cannons meandered through the streets of the city center on the 3.5 kilometer route. The many spectators on the side of the road had sweets thrown at them for coming.

Axel Heilmann, President of the Great Council, hosted the procession with aplomb and good humour for Hessischer Rundfunk, which broadcast it live on television. Mayor Peter Feldmann surprised him in the speaker's booth.

The city leader, who is also an honorary senator of the Grand Council, greeted the fools from the stands on the Römerberg starting at 12.11 pm. He said at the end: "All in all, another enjoyable parade in which the associations have shown great and creative commitment. This is what makes Frankfurt's Fassnacht fun."

Following the procession, the parade moved to the Römer, where the traditional fastnachtliche Kreppelkaffee took place in the Wandelhalle.
