Honoring the exceptional musician at the Musikmesse
Award ceremony with musical performance at Frankfurt's Paulskirche on April 7
Internationally successful violinist David Garrett will be honored with the 2017 Frankfurt Music Prize. The award is presented annually at the Musikmesse and honours personalities who have made a special contribution to the global music scene and culture through their work. David Garrett will receive the award on April 7 in Frankfurt's Paulskirche and will give a small insight into some of his artistic work live on stage.
The Board of Trustees of the Frankfurt Music Prize praises David Garrett as an artist who succeeds in introducing countless people to classical music through his crossover projects and at the same time arouses curiosity for classical music with his chamber music evenings and orchestral concerts. In doing so, it highlights Garrett's concern to document his personal roots in classical music at the highest international level through purely classical projects in its statement.
David Garrett
Born in Aachen in 1980, Garrett has already sold more than 2.5 million records during the course of his career, earning him twelve platinum and seven gold awards in Germany alone. He gained particular fame with the album "Rock Symphonies", which spent 72 weeks in the German charts.
David Garrett made his first appearances as a violinist at an early age - at the age of 12 he had his first recording contract with Deutsche Grammophon as the youngest artist. Numerous successful studio and live albums followed, as well as awards such as the Echo of the German Phono Academy, the Golden Feather and the Bambi of Classical Music. In addition, he was an ambassador for UNESCO and was in the Guinness Book of Records for two years as the fastest violinist in the world.
David Garrett's work is characterized by the blending of classical works with modern pop and rock music, as well as the high experience factor at his concerts. Many of his fans have come into contact with classical music for the first time in this way. However, he also managed to reach a wide audience with classical music recordings in the narrower sense. Throughout his career, Garrett has worked with some of the world's most distinguished conductors, including Claudio Abbado and Zubin Mehta.
Frankfurt Music Prize
Since 1982, the Frankfurt Music Prize has honored players in the music scene for exceptional achievements in interpretation, composition, musicology, teaching and the promotion of music-making. With Frankfurt's Paulskirche, a building steeped in history serves as the venue this year, where the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade and the Goethe Prize of the City of Frankfurt, among others, are awarded.
The music prize, sponsored by the Federal Association of German Musical Instrument Manufacturers (BDMV) and Messe Frankfurt, is endowed with 15,000 euros. Previous winners include Udo Lindenberg, Peter Gabriel, Keith Emerson and Marie-Luise Neunecker. Most recently, the Frankfurt Music Prize went to the recently deceased American singer and songwriter Al Jarreau.
