Frankfurt Zoo awarded for educational work

Frankfurt Zoo awarded for educational work

On November 27, Frankfurt Zoo's educational work was awarded the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) certificate by the state of Hesse. The award was presented by four Hessian ministries - for agriculture and the environment, culture and education, social affairs and the economy - and recognizes the zoo's commitment to sustainable education.

Focus on education for sustainable development

The concept of education for sustainable development aims to raise people's awareness of the importance of environmental protection, social justice, a sustainable economy and cultural diversity. These values are an integral part of Frankfurt Zoo's educational work.

According to the certification commission, the zoo's educational offer is characterized by a multi-perspective approach with global references. The animal-based pedagogy, which presents animals in their natural habitat and counteracts humanization, was particularly highlighted. Topics such as climate change, littering and habitat destruction are discussed with children and young people in an age-appropriate way.

"Central ambassadors of their species"

Ina Hartwig, Head of the Department of Culture, emphasizes the importance of zoo education: "Especially in a big city like Frankfurt, which is becoming increasingly urbanized, the zoo makes an important contribution to promoting an understanding of nature and sustainability. The fact that it reaches all social groups is particularly remarkable." Martina Weiser, Head of Education at the zoo, adds: "Our aim is to show people what impact their actions have and how they can contribute to a sustainable future."

Ceremonial presentation in Wiesbaden

The ceremonial presentation of the certificate took place in the State Chancellery in Wiesbaden. Social Affairs Minister Heike Hofmann and other state secretaries presented the certificate to 60 educational institutions, including the zoo. Martina Weiser and Nina Tebati accepted the award on behalf of Frankfurt Zoo.
