It already applies to our neighbours in Austria. And with Jena, a German city has also already introduced the mouth guard duty. The effect of simple masks has not been scientifically proven and even Chancellor Merkel fears that wearing them would lull people into a false sense of security. Nevertheless, many experts advocate wearing simple mouth-nose masks in public places where the distance cannot be kept. While Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder firmly believes that mandatory masks will come, the Robert Koch Institute has now also changed its stance on mouth guards. Wearing a mouthguard, according to the RKI on its homepage, could reduce the risk of transmitting viruses to other people. And Christian Drosten, chief virologist at Berlin's Charité, also advocates wearing masks - not for one's own protection, but to protect other people.
However, protective masks are in short supply, especially in this time of crisis. Professional masks should definitely be withheld from people who work in medicine and nursing. For the quite normal everyday life a simple makeshift mouth guard is sufficient, which you can sew yourself quite easily at home. The advantage: You can design the masks according to your individual taste. Beautifully coloured, with the crest of your favourite club on it or decorated with funny sayings. There are no limits to your creativity.
On the net you can find many instructions on how to make simple protective masks yourself. The voluntary fire brigade of the city of Abensberg has published a very clear instruction - with the request to sew masks for the Abensberg helpers.

It is always important to note that the makeshift mouthguard fits well and the nose and mouth are well covered. In addition, it should be pointed out again that a mouthguard does not provide protection against infection, but can protect against passing on the virus. Therefore, even with a mouthguard: keep your distance, sneeze into the crook of your arm and wash your hands regularly!
